Hearthstone Announces Individual Household Names for The Cottages

The Chronicle

Pella — Hearthstone, a Ministry of WesleyLife, recently announced the results of the Name Your Cottage contest in which local residents voted for their favorite names for The Cottages from among the 12 provinces of the Netherlands.

The contest results determined that the six individual cottages in this innovative community for older adults, now under construction in Pella, will be named after the following provinces, listed in order of popularity:

- Friesland (Assisted Living)

-Gelderland (Household Living)

-Zeeland (Assisted Living Memory Support)

-South Holland (Household Living)

-North Holland (Household Living Memory Support)

-Groningen (Household Living)

To continue honoring local tradition and heritage, Hearthstone is asking for the general public to submit family photographs of the Netherlands to be showcased as part of the interior décor in the public areas of each of the six cottages.

“The Cottages will be home for our residents,” says Hearthstone Executive Director Nancy Hamilton. “We want to continue involving the local community in this project by inviting residents to submit their photographs of the six provinces or the Netherlands in general for the consideration of our interior designer, Jill Schroeder.”

“This is a unique approach that reinforces The Cottages will be home for its residents,” says Schroeder, who is part of the Pope Architects team, the firm that designed The Cottages. “Just like traditional homes, The Cottages will showcase cherished memories and the heritage of its residents and the greater community.”

“I look forward to seeing historic and contemporary photos taken anywhere in the Netherlands, but especially in the six provinces for which the individual cottages are named,” adds Schroeder. “I would love to see some photos with people in them—not just landscapes.”

The deadline for submitting photos is Wednesday, July 10. Photos may be black and white or color and should have a resolution of at least 240 dots per inch at 8 x 10 inches or be from an original photo negative, print or slide. Photos may be of people, various aspects of Dutch culture, landscapes, skylines, historical or contemporary structures, architectural details and gardens.

Photos no larger than 10 megabytes may be emailed (one photo per message) to Hearthstone at Photos also may be submitted on a CD sent or delivered to Fair Haven East, 607 E. Third St., Pella, IA 50219. Hearthstone cannot guarantee the safety or return of CDs.

All photos submitted must be accompanied by the following information, which may be included in the email message or in a Word or other text file on the CD:

-Owner’s name, email and mailing address and phone number

-General description of the photo

-Where the photo was taken (the more specific, the better)

-Year or era in which the photo was taken

-Names of people in the photo (from left to right)

Photos submitted to Hearthstone become the property of Hearthstone and may be used in any way in The Cottages. Owners of the photos selected for display in The Cottages will be recognized and invited to a special reception.

If a photo is chosen to be displayed, a release form will be provided to the submitter for completion this fall.

The Weitz Company began construction of The Cottages this spring on the 50-acre building site along North Main Street near Big Rock Road. The community, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013, will be home to more than 100 older adults with a culture that is based on abilities and living life to the fullest. Residents will enjoy both their independence and the benefits of being part of a close-knit community.
