Dole honored recently with Ordination of Deacons

The Pella Chronicle

---- — On Thursday, October 3, Jeffrey A. Dole from the Davenport parish of St. Mary’s in Pella, received the Ordination of Deacons at the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter, Vatican City State. Jeff has been taking classes in Rome at the Gregorian University through the Diocese of Dubuque. Jeff is a graduate of Pella High School, Iowa State University and attended Loras College before heading to Rome. Jeff is the son of Patty and Alan Dole of Pella. Attending this celebration were his maternal grandmother, Rose Marie Schiltz, Aunt Angie Kasch, Great-aunt Edna Zeimet along with his Aunt and Uncle Andy and Jean Dole.

What does “The Order of Deacons” mean? From the Ordination of Deacons program: “The answer may be found in the scriptural origins of the diaconate. Chapter six of Acts of the Apostles describes the early Church. As the Church rapidly grew in apostolic times, it was threatened by disunity as “Hellenists murmured against the Hebrews because their widows were neglected in the daily distributions.” The Apostles, whose own ministry preclude them from handling such day-to-day disputes, chose seven men to assist them who were of “good repute,” “full of the Spirit and of wisdom.” Through their work the deacons administered the earthly needs of the Church, freeing the Apostles to devote themselves to prayer and the ministry of the word.” Today, this ministry is as important as it was then. This opportunity to serve is an important step in forming them for their priestly ministry. This is sometimes referred to as a transitional diaconate.

The ordination started with a Gregorian chant prior to the beginning of the Mass which included Laying on of Hands and Prayer of Ordination, Vesting of the New Deacons, and Handing On of the Book of Gospels. His Eminence James Cardinal Harvey, Archpriest of the Papal Basilica of Saint Paul’s Outside the Walls, conferred the Sacrament on the class of 41 students. Monsignor James Checchio, the rector, assisted Cardinal Harvey during the Mass.

A Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated on October 4, the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi at Casa Santa Maria at the Pontifical North American College. The celebrant was Rev. Scott Bullock from the Archdiocese of Dubuque and Rev. Jeff Belger, Saint Mary’s, Pella concelebrated. Rev. Jeffrey Dole was the Deacon and Homilist for the celebration.

Jeff will return to Dubuque to receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders on June 28, 2014 and following that, he will say his first Mass. The following weekend Jeff will say Mass in Pella.
