As reported in The Chronicle, a search warrant was excuted on Oct. 9 at facilities managed by Community Care, Inc., including the Marion County Care Facility. Dave Pillers, Vice President of CCI, said he and the rest of the board are cooperating with a federal government investigation.
Pillers said he and the board first learned of the investigation when the warrant was served. The board meets monthly, but it does not handle day-to-day operations. They were shocked to learn of allegations related to possible Medicaid fraud and knew they had to act quickly.
The board has been working with the Iowa Medicaid Enterprise and the Iowa Department of Human Services to keep their facilities’ doors open. As part of an agreement with DHS, CCI is paying a third-party management firm, the Columbus Group, to oversee its facilities.
The management teams, previously employed by CCI, have been dismissed, including those at the facility in Marion County.
Assistant US Attorney General Peter Deegan told The Chronicle on Thursday, Oct. 17, that he could not confirm or deny any investigation into CCI. Pillers said the board has been working with the attorney general’s office.
“We’re cooperating and working with the AG’s office,” Pillers said. He added that the board has been working diligently to correct issues with CCI facilities, and that the board remains dedicated to ensuring the health and safety of those CCI serves.
CCI was contracted by Marion County to operate the facility a few years ago. By allowing CCI to handle the management of the facility, residents for which Marion County is responsible became eligible for Medicaid.
Marion County still owns the building and grounds. The County recently completed work on a new sewer project at the facility as well.
