Recently, the Pella Community Foundation awarded Bethany Christian Services a $1,500 grant, in addition to a grant that was also awarded in the same amount from the Vermeer Charitable Foundation, for the Jane Brown Adoption Workshop weekend held earlier this month. The workshop was sponsored by Bethany Christian Services.
Jane Brown, M.S.W., a world-renowned adoption author and educator began the event with an informational session for adoptive parents, professionals, and others at Third Christian Reformed Church in Pella.
“We had the privilege of having Jane lead three different Playshop sessions based on age with adopted persons,” Leah Garland, Executive Branch Director, Bethany Christian Services Of South Central Iowa said. “We had many parents and children ages 4-16 years participate in the sessions, and everyone involved said that they gained many concepts and were able to discuss many things that adopted persons experience throughout the different life stages. Most of all, everyone had fun with the activities and getting to know one another..
The event also featured adult mentors according to Garland.
“We had wonderful adult mentors who are also adopted persons,” Garland said. “This was a valuable experience for everyone involved. Bethany Christian Services plans to continue these Playshops with kids of all ages to continue building on the wonderful weekend.”
This year the Pella Community Foundation awarded 34 grants totaling $50,000 to Pella area organizations. Since 1993 the Foundation has awarded 426 board directed grants totaling $722,451. To learn more about the foundation go to www.PellaCommunityFoundation.org.
