Linda Beem, 6th District President of the American Legion Auxiliary met with officials at the Central Iowa VA, to present money collected for the homeless Veterans.
As 6th District President over the past year, Mrs. Beem chose the Homeless Veteran as her special project with emphasis on two basic needs, transportation and underwear.
As she traveled and spoke throughout the 6 counties in Central Iowa, that comprise the 6th District, she collected donations, and conducted small fund raisers for this project. The Pella American Legion Auxiliary Unit (club) is part of 6th District. Their donation was included with this presentation.
On Monday, June 16, she traveled to the Des Moines VA, to present over $1,400 collected for this project. The transportation portion will be used to purchase bus tokens, so that the homeless veteran can travel to and from medical appointments at the VA.
They can also travel for job interviews, and possibly to and from jobs they have. The underwear portion of the funds will be used to purchase underwear for the annual Stand Down held each year at the state capitol grounds.
This program is a three day event that assists the homeless veteran with clothing, medical needs, job counseling, food, and other needs.
Mrs. Beem was one of nine American Legion Auxiliary District Presidents in the state of Iowa that collected monies for various projects to help our veterans. Her term in office will close in July at the State American Legion convention. She says this has been a great year, and she was glad to help our veterans in this way.
