NWS informs Marion County to expect blizzard conditions

Marion County — The National Weather Service has informed the Marion County Secondary Road Department that Marion County should expect 10 inches of snow and winds with gusts up to 40 Miles per hour that could result in blizzard conditions. The snow is predicted to fall through noon on Thursday and the wind is not expected to subside until early Friday Morning. Significant blowing and drifting that could block roads is likely to occur. These conditions will result in difficult driving conditions and at times impassable roads possibly through Sunday. Travelers are encouraged to make alternate plans through the duration of these conditions.  During this time travel is not recommended. The Secondary Road Department will be treating and plowing the secondary roads in accordance with the Marion County Snow and Ice Clearance Chapter 22 Ordinance.  In an extreme cases, a travel emergency could be declared per chapter 22.06, defined as follows:

22.06 EMERGENCY.  Service or the level or sequence of service may be suspended during emergency conditions.  An “emergency condition” is considered as one where a loss of life is probable, where serious injury has occurred, or where extensive loss of property is imminent.  These conditions should be verified through the 911 dispatcher or Sheriff’s Office.  The County may respond to all “emergency conditions,” either during or after a snow storm.  Any person who makes a false report of an emergency to an officer, official, or employee of the County or who causes a false report to be so made shall be in violation of this Code of Ordinances.

At this time the Secondary Road Department is anticipating plowing snow on paved roads until 8 PM Wednesday and begin plowing the paved roads again at 4 AM Thursday and working on these roads until 8 PM Thursday. Additional paved road plowing is anticipated beginning at 4 AM Friday and continuing through the day.

On the rock roads the Secondary Road Department anticipates there could be over 300 locations where the rock roads could be drifted to the point where the road is impassable. At this time it is anticipated the motor graders will begin plowing at 4 AM Thursday and will work through the day on Thursday. Blowing and drifting conditions could limit the effectiveness of this effort therefore rock roads may not be passable until sometime Sunday. Initial plowing efforts on rock roads will be to get these roads open with one lane, so extreme caution should take place during the time these conditions exist.

No snow removal operations on the Secondary Roads will occur between the hours of 8PM Wednesday and 4 AM Thursday and again between 8 PM Thursday and 4 AM Friday.

The road department has coordinated with County Emergency Management and Law Enforcement to support emergency operations should an emergency occur.
