Dutch Oven Cook Off coming to Pella

Pella — They love to cook with their black cast-iron pots, they probably have better equipped outdoor kitchens than indoor kitchens and there is no electrical appliances, they love Pampered Chef, William-Sonoma and any other little kitchen stores they find and they actually know what a sous chef is. Who are these people? They are the members of Iowa Prairie Rose Dutch Oven Society and they love to cook with their camp Dutch ovens.

Iowa Prairie Rose Dutch Oven Society is a group of people from Iowa who love to cook and promote Dutch oven cooking. This group has regular get-togethers called DOGs (Dutch Oven Gatherings) in and around Iowa and guests who would like to see what they do or try their hand at cooking are encouraged to join them. Whether they get together for a day or a weekend this group loves to cook, visit and share stories and recipes and eat some of the best food around.

Iowa Prairie Rose is a chapter of the Lone Star Dutch Oven Society and many of the members are members of the International Dutch Oven Society. These two organizations have web sites that can be viewed for those interested in their activities.

Another activity of the Iowa Prairie Rose is sponsoring an annual Dutch Oven cook off. The past four years this cook off has been held in the town of Fremont. This year the cook off will be held in Pella on May 18 2013 at the Caldwell Shelter House. It will be called "Going Dutch" Dutch oven cook-off. Iowa Prairie Rose is encouraging teams to form to compete in one, two or all three of the divisions. The divisions are: desserts, main dishes/meats and breads. This will be a sanctioned event and the team with the most points is eligible to go and compete in the World Dutch Oven Cook Off in Utah in March.

A lot of people believe that the only things that can be made in a Dutch oven are cobblers and stews and this is far from the fact. Just about anything that can be made in a regular oven can be adjusted to be made in a Dutch oven. Desserts can range from pies to cheesecakes, main dishes can include lasagna to a wonderful stuffed pork loin. And breads can be delicious cinnamon rolls to a savory sourdough bread. Even ice cream can be made in a Dutch oven with a bit of imagination.

There is a lot of fun with the cook off and to get started get a team together of 2-3 people and for fun give the team a name. Some of the names of previous cook off teams are: You People, Not Your Mamma's Cooking, Kickin' Kast-Iron Kweens, The Dutchmen, and Cooking With Attitude. Teams may choose to compete in one of the divisions or in two or all three. Prepare for the day by visiting some of the members of Iowa Prairie Rose to find out what happens during the day and start working on your recipes. Rules and regulations will be available. You will find that the day is filled with fun, laughter and friendship. For more information about Dutch Oven Cooking or the cook off contact Marlyn Hoksbergen at (641) 780-2631.
