Coal mining in Iowa event set at Pella Public Library

Pella — Join others on Thursday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Pella Public Library meeting room to hear local historian Doug Wilson talk about Coal Mining in Iowa.

Coal mining historian Doug Wilson grew up on a farm east of Knoxville, Iowa.  He developed a curiosity, and then a passion, for researching old-time underground coal mining when he discovered, through genealogical history, that his grandfather’s and great-grandfather’s children had all been born in various coal camps in southern Iowa.

The story he’s going to tell is from his lecture series “Coal Mining in Iowa.” It is about Mahaska and Monroe counties, the part played by Consolidation Coal Company, and the communities of Muchakinock, Buxton, Haydock and Bucknell.

Wilson is presently retired and lives in Knoxville.  His working years were spent with Vermeer Company in sales.

The program is free and open to the public.  If you have any questions, please call the Pella Public Library at 628-4268.
