October 7-11 City of Pella's Fall Clean-up Week

Fall Clean-up Week is a means for Pella residential customers to conveniently dispose of bulky items that do not fit inside a garbage tote. Participation in clean-up week is limited to those who have been issued a City of Pella authorized tote (Dark blue with windmills stamped on the sides). Excluded from the program are electronics, appliances, and remodel/construction debris. If you have questions about an item, please contact Midwest Sanitation at 641-628-2610; for all other questions contact Public Works at 641-628-1601. Please consider donating any usable items to an organization of your choosing. Pick up will take place on the normal garbage collection day, on the curbside by 7 am. Please keep all items at least 4 feet from the garbage tote and other obstructions.

October 10 Vermeer Leadership Alliance - Chap Clark event

Chap Clark, associate provost of regional campuses and special projects and professor at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, will be presenting on the topic: The Church and the New Adolescent. This is a day-long event with registration required. If registration is postmarked by October 2 the cost is $25, after October 2 the cost is $35. Registration fee includes lunch, snacks, and drinks as well as registration. October 11 Fitness Center Groundbreaking

The Pella Recreation Center (PRC) is excited to announce the groundbreaking of a new building that will expand fitness, sports, and athletic development programming for Pella and surrounding areas. Come see the future site and hear how PRC and Work Systems Rehab & Fitness, P.C. are collaborating to further empower individuals with health solutions that enable them to get well and stay well. Groundbreaking will be on Friday, October 11 at 9 am.  Please park in the current Work Systems Rehab & Fitness parking lot at 308 SE 9th St. shortly before 9 am.  Comments from key employees will be provided and you can ask questions of our team following the 15 minute presentation.

October 11 Central College presents Greek Dinner with Wine Pairings Inaugural Dinner

The office of cultural affairs invites you to our inaugural wine tasting dinner featuring Greek cuisine and wine. Maureen Osgood of Dimitri Wine and Spirits will provide information on the wines as we proceed through the courses. A preview of the dinner: Appetizers of pita bread with dips, feta cheese; Salad with vinaigrette; Pork Shiskabob and Spinach pie with Rice Pilaf; and dessert of Galoto Bouriko, custard with Phyllo in cinnamon sauce. Cost is $40 per person and includes dinner and wine with each course.  A portion of the ticket cost helps to support  cultural events in the community. Event held in the Graham Annex at 6:30 pm. October 12 Habitat for Humanity's Golf Tournament

Help raise money for Habitat for Humanity of Marion County, Inc. while having a great time golfing! This 9 hole best shot tournament at the Pine Knolls Country Club in Knoxville has a 10 am shotgun start. $50 entry fee per person (please register with a foursome) includes cart rental, round of golf, meal and prizes. October 12 Drive One 4 UR School fundraiser at Ulrich Ford-Lincoln

Come support Pella Schools by attending Ford's Drive One 4 UR School fundraising event at Ulrich Ford-Lincoln. In an effort to raise up to $6,000 to benefit both Pella Christian and Pella Public Schools, $20 will be donated for every valid test drive completed. Previously this event has raised over $52,000 for local schools.The event will be held at Ulrich Ford-Lincoln, 1130 West 16th Street, Pella, from 8 am to 3 pm. Questions? Contact 641-628-2184.

October 12 Free Family Fun Fall Fest

Bring your family out to enjoy the fun of fall! Featuring pumpkin painting, face painting, horse back riding, dunk tank, hay rack rides, carnival games, balloon animals, wheelbarrow races, caricature sketches, Smitty's kids train ride, mini pumpkin launch, and much more. Food and beverages will be available at minimal cost. Held at the Tim and Sharon Van Roekel Farm, 2414 Illinois Street in Pella. Rain date is Saturday, October 19. Sponsored by First Reformed Church with volunteer support from Trinity Reformed Church.

October 12 De Bloemen Hof presents Needing Help with Your Houseplants?

Come to this class to learn about growing and keeping your houseplants alive during the winter months. We will discuss the best types of plants for your indoor light conditions and proper fertilizer and watering schedules. We will also discuss common indoor plant pests. October 13 Central College presents Halloween Piano Concert

Listen to this spooky Halloween piano recital themed "Music of Horror and Disguise"! Featuring Paul Kovacovic playing Chopin's Funeral March, Schumann's Carnival, and other twisted tunes. Death brings drastic change and impacts those left behind. Garden Chapel sponsors an 8 week support group for all who are adjusting to life without your loved one. October 19 de Bloemen Hof presents Kids Garden Club: Decorate Pumpkins

Decorating/ carving pumpkins! Choose a pumpkin from our assortment of pumpkins, carve or decorate them at de Bloemen Hof and leave the mess with us. October 19 Red Rock Threshers' Corn Picking Day

Step back into the past and enjoy as antique corn pickers and antique shellers pick corn; bring your neighbors, friends and family! You are welcome to help or just sit back and watch! From 9:30am to 3pm at the Arvin Van Wyk farm, 316 204th Place (Go north on Main Street, turn right on 228th Place, go 1.9 miles, turn left on 240th Place, farm is 2 miles on the east side of the road). Pella Farmer's Market  

Pella's Farmer's Market is held at First Reformed Church every Thursday from 3-6 pm and Saturday from 9am-12pm. Great plants and produce!  Some new vendors, and trusted veterans, too!


Thursday Night Bingo

Have fun playing Bingo! Proceeds benefit St. Mary's Catholic Church. Children 10-17 welcome with an adult. It is held every Thursday from 6:30-8:30 pm at 1203 Peace Street (old church). Game prices range from $1.00 to 2.00 a game or $15 for a game packet. For more information contact Peggy Moriarity at 641-628-1549.  

Registration for Pella Recreation Youth Basketball Program

Register today for this program for boys and girls currently in grades 3-6. The boys will start October 14 through December 14 with no practices or games the week of Thanksgiving. The girls will start January 6 through March 1. Each team, coached by parents, will practice one night a week on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday with games on Saturday. Coaches are also needed! Boys register now through September 27, girls register now through December 13 at the Community Services Office, 712 Union Street. Cost is $40 in city limits or $48 outside city limits. A late fee of $25 will be charged after the deadline.
