PCHS Sends Two Individuals to All-State Speech Festival

Pella — Two events from Pella Christian High School's Individual Speech program were recently nominated as Outstanding Performers, which invited them to participate in the Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA) All-State Festival on March 25, 2013 on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

All-State participants included Cory Van Gilst (Literary Program) and Jordan Breon (Storytelling).  Only 400 of over 9,000 speech students were nominated across the state as Outstanding Individual All-State performers.

This is their second All-State speech honor this year, having also qualified in Large Group with the one-act, "Blood Brothers."  A four-time qualifier, this is Van Gilst’s second year in a row that he has been honored.

Performers in All-State are determined by judges' nominations from the State Speech Tournament.  Pella Christian had 8 events qualify for that State competition, which was held at Vinton-Shellsburg High School on March 9, 2013.

Four of the events received a sweep of straight I's that day, including Cory Van Gilst (Lit Program), Jordan Breon (Storytelling), Breanna Terpstra (Prose), and Malia Beatty (Storytelling).

Also competing at the State Competition in Vinton were:  Jaclyn Kuyers (Prose), Courtney Griggs (Musical Theatre), Cory Van Gilst (Musical Theatre), and Malia Beatty (Poetry).

Pella Christian's Speech Forensic Team is coached by Marlo Van Peursem and Helen Luhrs.
