New Pertussis Booster Requirement for Fall School Year

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, there is a new pertussis booster requirement for all students entering, advancing or transferring into 7th grade and born on or after September 15, 2000. As of fall 2013, and all future school years, these students will need an adolescent tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) booster immunization (called “Tdap”) for school.
This new requirement will help protect your child and others in school and the community from whooping cough. Whooping cough is a serious disease that causes coughing fits that can last for months. In recent years, whooping cough has been increasing in the United States and in Iowa.
Schedule children entering 7th grade for their annual wellness exam, which includes a dose of Tdap, by going to www.pellahealth.org/annualphysical. If the student has already received the Tdap they do not need a second booster.
Documentation of the Tdap vaccine on the certificate of immunization will need to be provided to your child’s school prior to the first day of school. To get an updated certificate of immunization call the medical clinic:
