Book teaches children the meaning of Tulip Time

Pella — In her new book, If You Go to Tulip Time, former Pella kindergarten teacher Tricia Ballenger seeks to share with children the meaning and history behind the traditions of Tulip Time. Ballenger will celebrate the release of her book, published by The Write Place, with a book reading at Thursday Nights in Pella on July 11. She will also be selling and signing copies.

“I am so excited to be able to share the beauty, history and excitement of Pella’s annual Tulip Time festival through the eyes of a child,” said Ballenger. “For parents and educators, this is a great way to get children interested in what makes our town unique.” Skillfully interwoven with educational details, young and old will delight in the celebration as the citizens of Pella honor their Dutch heritage.

Tricia has loved Tulip Time ever since she moved to Pella as a first grader. As a high school student, she was involved in Dutch dancing and marching band, and also represented Pella as the 1971 Tulip Queen. She taught kindergarten in Pella for 25 years and walked with her classes every year in the Tulip Time parades. “As a teacher, I wanted all my students to know the importance of community service and honoring Pella’s history,” said Ballenger. “I always thought there was an opportunity for a book of this nature to be added to my curriculum, and writing it fulfills a dream I’ve had for many years.”

The book can be purchased from, from the Pella Historical Museum Store at the Vermeer Windmill or directly from the author by calling 641-780-3558.
