May 10 Hearthstone presents Alzheimer's Support Group  

This monthly support group supports caregivers, family members and friends with a loved one with memory problems. Trained Alzheimer's Support Group Facilitators and Hearthstone staff Nancy Van Wyk, RN, and Amy Stolzfus, MSW, lead the group. This month will focus on how to plan for purposeful activities for your loved one with dementia. 1:30 pm at Pella Manor East Social Room, 608 E 2nd St. Call Nancy at 641-204-2655 with questions.

May 11 ACTS Service Surge 2013

Join in a day of helping your neighbors! The annual Service Surge will be held in 6 communities (Ottumwa, Oskaloosa, Knoxville, Melcher, Chariton and Pella).  Sign up under "Service Surge" on-line at to volunteer your time for a day of service.  It is a small time commitment with a huge impact on a community! May 11 De Bloemen Hof presents Colorful Mixed Container Combinations Workshop

May 11 Central College Commencement

Baccalaureate and a gathering of the class of 2013 will be held in Douwstra Auditorium at 3 pm. Class dean Leslie Duinink will be the featured speaker. Following this ceremony, there will be a wine and cheese reception hosted by the college, and time for family dinners on your own at the Central Market or at a variety of restaurants around the Pella community. The commencement ceremony in H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse is planned for 8 pm. This year's commencement speaker is Central alumna Bernadette Allen '78. Bernadette is the former U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Niger, a post named by presidential appointment and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

May 12 Celebrate Mother's Day with Lunch at Tassel Ridge Winery

Treat that special lady in your life to Tassel Ridge Winery's Annual Mother's Day Lunch. Pamper her with a three-course lunch (seatings at 11 am and 1:30 pm) that will begin with a crisp Romaine Salad with Fresh Pears, Almonds, and Balsamic Vinaigrette paired with Tassel Ridge Candlelight followed by Grilled Shoulder Petite Tender Medallions with Roasted Red Potatoes and Seasoned Green Beans paired with a glass of her favorite Tassel Ridge wine (we suggest Tassel Ridge American Syrah). May 13 Pella Community High School Vocal Concert & Benefit Auction

Loads of fantastic new items, giftcards, tickets, collectibles, handmade roll-top desk, and more items donated daily. Silent auction at 5 pm, vocal concert at 7 pm, with live auction at 7:40 pm (at the Pella High School Auditorium). Proceeds go to Show Choir Performance Tour to the Bahamas in 2014. Questions? May 14-18 Union Street Players "Bye Bye Birdie" Auditions

Union Street Players, Pella's award-winning community theatre, is holding auditions for their summer production of "Bye Bye Birdie" (Directed by Denise Gregory). Audition times will be: Tuesday May 14 from 7-9 pm, Thursday May 16 from 7-9 pm, and Saturday May 18 from 9am-noon. No roles are pre-cast. May 14 Pella Community Art Center's Adult Plant Markers Class

It's time to get out in the yard but you can't remember what you planted where! Well, we can help with that by making plant markers! They will be made by recycling silverware and broken pottery. 7-9 pm at the Pella Community Art Center, 712 Union (enter through North door). $3, questions call 641-628-4571.

May 15 City of Pella: Free Bundled Brush Collection Day

Brush that will not fit in yard waste bags must be bundled using string, rope, or other biodegradable material (no wire or plastic). Brush bundles must measure less than 48 inches long, 30 inches in diameter, weigh less than 40 pounds, and must not contain branches greater than 3 inches in diameter. The City will collect the brush bundles, meeting the above requirements, at no charge, on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. Bundles must be on the curb by 7 am. Questions? Call 641-628-1601.

May 15 Union Vacation Bible School Registration and Carnival

Register for Vacation Bible School and enjoy a carnival evening! At Central Park from 6:30-8 pm (rain date is Saturday May 18 from 10:30-noon). Details for Vacation Bible School: All children who will be 4 years of age by September 15, 2013 through those entering sixth grade are invited to attend. Dates are June 10-14 from 9-11:30 am. May 16 Young Professionals of Pella: Ice Cream Social 

Looking for a great way to meet others in their 20's and 30's? Check out Young Professionals of Pella! This month's social will feature ice cream sundaes, lawn games, swimming available and lots of fun together at Holiday Inn Express (back lawn- access through lobby) from 7-9 pm. May 17 Wine & Pasta Date Night at Tassel Ridge Winery

Make it a Date Night at Tassel Ridge Winery! Come for wine tasting at 6 pm, then dinner begins at 6:30 pm with an Italian Salad and Assorted Breads paired with Tassel Ridge Candlelight. Chef Heather will then prepare your pasta to order. Your choices will include Angel Hair or Penne Pasta with one of our house-made sauces, Bruschetta or Chicken Alfredo.
