Prickett makes tough choice, excited to call Pella home

Leaving something good is some times tough. Ryan Prickett, 36, Brown’s Shoe Fit Manager in Pella, knows that all too well.

Prickett, who is originally from Mt. Pleasant, started his new role beginning at the first of the year, following the retirement of Wayne Whitham.

“I still have family there,” Prickett said.

Prickett, who previously had been the store manager of Brown’s in Colorado Springs, CO, felt like Pella was a good ‘middle-ground’ for him and his wife, Anissa. Anissa, who is a Registered Nurse with a degree in Health Care Administration, has family in the Kansas City area and Prickett thought this might be a good chance to get away from the city.

“It was a hard to leave there,” Prickett admitted “It’s beautiful there. The misconception is the weather is like it is here - it’s not. It’s a lot nicer there. I think it was 55 there (last week) on Thursday. It took us many months to make our decision to come to Pella.

Pella makes it a fourth stop running a Brown’s store for Prickett. He has managed in Ottawa, KS, Spencer, IA, Colorado Springs, CO and now Pella.

“I had an uncle who ran a store and I started working for him,” Prickett said. “That’s how I got started. I really didn’t know much about Pella growing up in Southeast Iowa.”

Prickett first visited Pella, with the thoughts of moving in June of 2013.

“We didn’t have a good chance to really explore Pella,” he said. “My wife and I came back in September. We went to a lot of places, visited both schools and chatted with people. There’s a lot of pluses to Pella. But the decision came down to where is the best place to raise our son, Saer (4) and we have a baby on the way. We didn’t really have a reason to leave Colorado. We loved it out there. It was hard, but Colorado Springs is a city and had city issues.”
