American Legion Flag Essay Contest held locally

American Legion Post 89 has just completed its annual “Fifth Grade Flag Essay Contest.” This is a contest to teach 5th grade students about the history, the meaning of the United States flag and how to honor and display it. It also allows the students the opportunity to express themselves, what they learned and what the flag means to them all in the form of an essay.

All the essays are entered into a local contest and judged and the three best ones are picked. The 1st place winner advances to the 6th Legion District Contest. If successful there they then advance on to the State Contest.

All 117 5th grade students at Jefferson Elementary School participated this year.

The first place winner was Kaina Geetings. She is the daughter of Alan and Angie Geetings. The second place winner was Alyssa Geettings, daughter of Darrin and Angie Geetings and the third place winner was Jessa Van Gorp, daughter of Dan and Lynn Van Gorp.

All participating students received a “Certificate of Partication” and the winners earned Gold, Silver and Bronze medals and cash awards.

Post 89 wants to congratulate the winners and thank the students for participating. They also want to thank the 5th grade teachers for their cooperation.
