Board discusses improvement request for Pella High School’s athletic facility

Pella — The Pella Community School Board met earlier in October, for a regular work session. Members present were President Joan Corbin, Gary Coppock, Michelle Van Maanen, and Timothy Tripp. Since no public comments were received, the Directors moved forward with approval of invoices for the School’s October payment. The following personnel changes were examined and approved:

New Hires:

Ryan DeVries- Middle School Boys’ Basketball Coach

Mitch Foster- Middle School Girls’ Basketball Coach

Amber Lyle- Part Time Special Education Associate at Jefferson

Transfers:

Amy Killoren- Lincoln Elementary Full time 1:1 Special Education Associate

The annual FFA National Convention Trip was next up for discussion. On the 22 through the 24, twelve students travelled to Louisville, KY, on a charter bus with other Iowa FFA Chapters. To enrich the FFA experience, it is the district’s goal for each FFA member to attend at least one convention during their time at Pella High School.

In new business, the Directors discussed the upcoming improvement request for Pella High School’s athletic facility. It was deemed necessary that several improvements be made to the shot and discuss pads and for the batting cages. These changes will be in addition to the impending construction plans on the High School. Maintenance Director Chris Wimmer attended meeting to present the plans and the budget. The estimated total cost for these improvements will be $66,500. The Booster Club’s funding will take care of $16,500 of the total.

In the Board’s work session, Sally Ness and Chris De Groot from Neumann Monson architects attended the meeting to present the progress being made on the facility planning and construction process. Over the past several months, two projects have been in the works. Ness and De Groot described and discussed more of the planning process with the board, and presented schematic designs for both the Middle School and Lincoln Elementary projects. These facility construction plans are still in the works. More details will come as the construction process goes underway.
