Pioneer Days scheduled for May 25, 26

Pella —

Each year the Marion County Historical opens the season with Pioneer Days.  This year visitors are invited to a special celebration called Civil War Days.  On Saturday May 25, The Army of the Southwest Iowa reenactors will present an encampment, battles, and skirmishes.  There will also be a fashion show and an educational display.  The unit consists of Confederate and Union infantry, artillery, and cavalry.  This special reenactment is  sponsored by the  Iowa State Savings Bank and the Marion County Historical Society.
The Knoxville Lions Club will be serving pancakes beginning at 7:00 am and the Historical Society will be serving Civil War era food for lunch until 4:00 pm when the celebration closes.  Home baked pies, cakes and cookies can also be purchased in the General Store.
Local historian Tony Pearson will give a presentation on Civil War Veterans of Marion County and the effects of the war on Central College.  Visitors will be able to view demonstrations of crafts appropriate to the Civil War Era and to participate in a quilt raffle.
On Sunday at 10:00 am everyone is invited to the church service to hear a sermon by the Rev. Olympia Brown Impersonator.  Rev. Brown was one of the few women preachers of the Civil War Era.
If you have a Civil War costume, you are encouraged to wear it.  Admission is free to all events.  For more information contact 641-628-4716 or 641-842-4895.
