Pella — May 14-18 Union Street Players "Bye Bye Birdie" Auditions



Union Street Players, Pella's award-winning community theatre, is holding auditions for their summer production of "Bye Bye Birdie" (Directed by Denise Gregory). Audition times will be: Tuesday May 14 from 7-9 pm, Thursday May 16 from 7-9 pm, and Saturday May 18 from 9am-noon. No roles are pre-cast. Auditions will be held in the Joan Kuyper Farver Auditorium; perusal scripts are available in the Pella Public Library. May 16 Young Professionals of Pella: Ice Cream Social 

Looking for a great way to meet others in their 20's and 30's? Check out Young Professionals of Pella! This month's social will feature ice cream sundaes, lawn games, swimming available and lots of fun together at Holiday Inn Express (back lawn- access through lobby) from 7-9 pm. Free, hope to see you there!





May 17 Wine & Pasta Date Night at Tassel Ridge Winery

Make it a Date Night at Tassel Ridge Winery! Come for wine tasting at 6 pm, then dinner begins at 6:30 pm with an Italian Salad and Assorted Breads paired with Tassel Ridge Candlelight. Chef Heather will then prepare your pasta to order. Your choices will include Angel Hair or Penne Pasta with one of our house-made sauces, Bruschetta or Chicken Alfredo. Choose a glass of your favorite Tassel Ridge wine to enjoy with your meal. May 17 "Yesterday and Today: The Interactive Beatles Experience" at Pella Opera House

May 18 Iowa Prairie Rose Dutch Oven Society Cookoff

Public is invited to attend and taste this cookoff for the Iowa Prairie Rose Dutch Oven Society! Teams will be cooking main dishes, desserts and breads in Dutch ovens, no electric appliances used in food preparation. Cooking begins at 9:30 am and judging is at noon. Winner can compete in world Dutch oven cookoff! A limited number of wristbands will be sold for $5 to sample the food. At Caldwell Park. Questions? Contact Marlyn Hoksbergen at 641-780-2631.





May 18 Comedy Monster Performance

Comedian Don T Jernagel performing at Joan Kuyper Farver Auditorium, Community Center, from 8-10 pm. Not for children: The show contains material that is politically incorrect, sexually explicit, and may be considered very offensive to some individuals. $10 at the door.





May 20-21 Pella Tulip Dig- Up Days

Tulips planted in specified street beds and the City parks will be available for removal on May 20 and May 21 (free). Please use a pitch fork when digging up bulbs and remove all foliage. Please do not leave stems and/or leaves behind or spill soil on the grand around the beds. All soil must remain in the flower beds. The street beds are located: Main Street from Huber to Liberty; Washington from Open Bible Church to Brinkhoff Park; Franklin Street from the Post Office to West Market Park. City parks include Brinkhoff, Central, West Market, Sunken Gardens, South, Community Center, Library, City Hall, Lions, and the Klokkenspel. Removal of tulips from any other bed is prohibited.





May 21 Welcome to Medicare Seminar

A free seminar is being offered by the State of Iowa's Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) and Crossroads of Pella, which will cover: Medicare Parts A & B benefits, Prescription Drug Benefits (Part D), Medicare Advantage Plans, and Medicare Supplement Insurance. Meeting will be held at Second Reformed Church Gathering Space, 612 Broadway at 5:30 pm. Registration required by May 14, 2013. Call 641-628-1212.





May 24 Pella Adult Co-Ed Sand Volleyball Registration Deadline

This program is designed for men and women to form teams for a friendly game of sand volleyball. Games will be played on Thursday evenings starting June 6 through August 1. A tournament will be held the following week. Minimum of 12 players per team with a minimum of 6 females per team. Registration fee is $90 per team. Registration forms at www.cityofpella.com. Registration deadline is Friday May 24 at 4:30 pm.





May 25 "Blazing the Trails" Fun Run 5k and 10k for Lake View Camp

Fast or slow, run or walk, enjoying God's creation is the way to go! This off-road race will be held at 9 am at Lake View 's new camp property just south of Pella. Can do a 5k run/walk or 10k run; all proceeds from the run will help send Angel Tree kids to camp this year (children with a parent in prison). Fee is $25 until May 22; $30 race day. May 25-26 Celebrate Tassel Ridge Winery's 7th Anniversary

Tassel Ridge Winery celebrates our 7th Anniversary, and we want you to come celebrate with us! Enjoy complimentary Winery and Grapemobile tours, as well as samples of beverages made with Tassel Ridge wines. The first 75 visitors each day will receive a commemorative Tassel Ridge 7th Anniversary glass. Open House will be 10 am- 6 pm Saturday and 12-6 pm Sunday.





May 25 Lake Red Rock presents Bird Banding

Join Nelson Hoskins, area birdwatcher and licensed bird bander, to experience what the science of bird banding is all about!  Mist nets will be set up around the Red Rock Visitor Center to capture small birds which will then be fitted with numbered leg bands to track their movements (if recaptured at some point in the future). Come check out the thrill of seeing live birds "in hand" as they are banded for future research! The activity is free of charge, and no reservations are needed.  Come anytime during the three-hour activity (7-10 am) to experience the action!  For more information, contact the Corps of Engineers office at (641) 828-7522 or (641) 628-8690.
