July 25-August 4 Union Street Players present "Bye Bye Birdie"

Union Street Players, Pella's award winning community theatre, is proud to present "Bye Bye Birdie", a musical satire on American society set in 1958. The story was inspired by the phenomenon of Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the Army in 1957, and has lots of 50's nostalgia and rockabilly music. All performances will be on the stage of the Joan Kuyper Farver Auditorium in the Pella Community Center (712 Union). Performances will be held Thursday July 25 at 7pm; Friday July 26 at 7pm; Saturday July 27 at 2pm; Friday August 2 at 7pm; Saturday August 3 at 7pm; and Sunday August 4 at 2pm. Tickets prices: Adults $12 in advance/ $15 at the door; Students $8 in advance/ $10 at the door; Balcony $10 (both in advance and at the door). Please order tickets at http://ticketpeak.com/usp.

  

August 2 Lake Red Rock presents "Cold-Blooded" Critters: Ecotherms of Iowa

Join the Pella Wildlife Company for a look at some of Iowa's "cold-blooded" animals (scientists call the Ecotherms) that depend on nature and their behavior to adjust their body temperature!  Meet at the Red Rock Visitors Center at 1 pm, free, no reservations needed. August 2 Hearthstone hosts Alzheimers Support Group

Meet to learn about "Alzheimers, not Normal Aging" at Pella Manor East Social Room at 1:30 pm.This monthly Alzheimer's Support Group supports caregivers, family members, and friends with a loved one with memory problems. Trained Alzheimer's support Group Facilitators Nancy Van Wyk, RN; and Amy Stoltzfus, MSW; of Hearthstone lead the group. For more information, please call Nancy at 641-204-2655.





August 2 Tassel Ridge Winery presents Wine & Burger Night

It's off to the Far East! Tonight's burger is an Asian Burger topped with Ginger-Lemon Aioli served on a Toasted Whole Wheat Bun with a side of Asian Slaw and a glass of your favorite Tassel Ridge wine (we recommend Tassel Ridge 2011 Iowa Marquette Rosé). For dessert, cool off with Chocolaterie Stam's refreshing Wine Gelato made with a specially selected Tassel Ridge wine. From 5:30-7:30 PM (Burgers served til 7 PM). August 3 Wine Dinner and Murder Mystery at Tassel Ridge Winery

Randy Manning's Jest Murder Mystery Co. returns to Tassel Ridge Winery to perform the comic murder mystery "A Fistful of Hollers." Come for wine tasting at 6 pm, and then dinner begins at 6:30 with a Mixed Baby Greens Salad with Dried Cranberries, Sliced Almonds, Blue Cheese Crumbles, and House Balsamic Vinaigrette paired with Tassel Ridge Candlelight followed by a Parmesan Chicken Breast served with Roasted Red Potatoes and Sautéed Green Beans with Bacon and Sweet Onions, paired with Tassel Ridge American Chardonnay. For dessert, enjoy Flourless Chocolate Cake paired with Tassel Ridge Oskyfizzante® Pink. Here's a sneak peek at the show: Welcome to the western town of "Dry Gulp." August 3 Lake Red Rock presents Pond Exploration

Go "mucking" in one of the lake area's wetlands! Dip nets and tubs will be available for you to try and catch some of the critters swimming and crawling in and around the area!  Mucking can be messy, so please wear old clothes and shoes. August 6 Pella Area Quilters Guild Meeting  

Pella Area Quilters Guild will hold their August meeting on Tuesday 7 PM in room 101 at Third Reformed Church, 708 E. 13th St. Pella, IA.  The program that evening will be presented by Jeramy Landauer & Kitty Jacobson, local quilt book author and quilt book publisher.  The title of there program is Quilt Book Publishing, the Basics and Beyond. The Pella Area Quilters Guild consists of members of all quilting abilities and interests.  A time is provided for show and tell of projects.  We welcome guests or new members at every meeting.





August 6 Glee Handbell Choir Concert

Enjoy the sounds of a handbell choir from Japan! These visiting musicians from Meiji Gakuin Higashimurayama High School in Tokyo, Japan will be performing Tuesday, August 6 at 7 pm at First Reformed Church (605 Broadway Street). A freewill offering will be collected for their group.





August 7 Lake Red Rock presents Kids Craft Day

Got creative kids? Bring your young artists to enjoy make-and-take nature craft activities!  Crafts provided in partnership with the Red Rock Arts Alliance. Meet at Red Rock Visitor Center, activity from 1-3 pm. Free, no reservation required. Questions? Call 641-628-8690.



 

August 9 Young Professionals host Friday After 5

Live Bands + Patio + Drinks + Summer + Great Company = A great way to end the week! Young Professionals of Pella are hosting this event, but anyone age 21+ are encouraged to attend! Bring a friend or make new ones. $5 admission covers live music and appetizers; cash bar available. Faraday's Law will be entertaining the crowd with covers of rock favorites like Journey, Kansas, Styx and the Black Keys.
