November 28: Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

November 28 Free Thanksgiving Meal hosted by First Reformed Church

Free Thanksgiving Meal by First Reformed Church! The meal is all volunteer run with funds donated form businesses in the community. Extra money is then given to the food shelf. Dinner is served from 11 am to 1 pm. The delicious meal includes mashed potatoes, corn, gravy, stuffing, rolls, salad, and pie. Meals are also prepared for carry-out and to deliver. 250-300 meals are served each year! We don't turn down help! November 29 - December 1 Tassel Ridge Winery presents Mulled Wine Event

'Tis the season to taste our award-winning wines and enjoy samples of Tassel Ridge Iowa Mulled Wine while shopping for the perfect gifts for the wine enthusiasts on your list! Our Gift Shop will be filled with items for holiday giving. You'll find a selection of Tassel Ridge wines and complementary wine-related gift items already assembled in a variety of gift baskets. Or, let our expert staff help you customize gift baskets with the wines and gift items of your choice. And don't forget to stock up on your favorite Tassel Ridge wines for holiday entertaining and hostess gifts! Hours are 9am-6pm Friday, 10am-6pm Saturday, and 12pm-6pm Sunday.

November 29-30 De Bloemen Hof presents Wreathmaking Workshops

Learn how to turn a form and our lovely selection of greens into a unique and eye-catching wreath for your door this year! Our staff will supply the technical know how, you bring your own special style, your gloves and pruners. We will make a 12" wreath with fresh greens and other decorations. There is a $30 materials fee for this class. Choose one of three class times: Friday, November 29 at 4 pm; Saturday, November 30 at 11 am; or Saturday, November 30 at 1 pm. November 29-30 De Bloemen Hof presents Winter Container Workshops

Don't leave your flower pots empty all winter! De Bloemen Hof can help you create a "Winter Container Garden", a stunning evergreen arrangement that will last until March (no fooling)! If you'd like to create at home, come for a simple how to or sign up for one of our workshops and make the mess here! We have an enormous selection of greens, pots, and accessories to choose from. Please bring your own pruners and gloves. Choose from three class times: Friday, November 29 at 5 pm; Saturday, November 30 at 12:30 pm; or Saturday, November 30 at 2:30 pm. November 29 Lake Red Rock presents Black Friday Fall Hike

Want something exciting to do after Thanksgiving? Come to Lake Red Rock for a nice peaceful hike on Black Friday morning instead of going shopping in the crowded stores! The hike offers a great excuse to get outdoors and wear off some calories from a big Thanksgiving meal. It's also a great opportunity to watch for and learn more about fall's local plants and animals. Participants will be hiking woodland and prairie trails. It may be cold in the morning, so plan to dress accordingly. Meet at the Volksweg trailhead by Howell Station (near the pond off 198th Place) at 10 am. November 30 Small Business Saturday in Pella

Head to Downtown Pella on Small Business Saturday for great holiday shopping and the chance to win one of over 30 gift certificates! Simply pick up a stamp sheet at a participating business or print one off at, spend $10 at four of the listed businesses that day, and then submit your sheet for the drawing. Also check out the Sinterklaas Parade at 10 am downtown (free) and carriage rides in Central Park (fee applies).

November 30 Sinterklaas Parade and Breakfast

A parade celebrating the Dutch Santa, Sinterklaas, will be held at 10 am from the Historical Village to the Tulip Toren. Sinterklaas and his helper Piets will cruise down main street on their ship, and children are welcome to dress up and walk along (meet at 9:45 at the Historical Village). Following the parade will be a breakfast at 10:30am at Second Reformed Church ($10, by reservation only) where children will learn the Sinterklaas song and story, as well as a treat. December 1 Davis Folkerts and Friends Concert

Kick off the holiday season with an annual Opera House tradition hearing the Mighty Barton- Iowa's best restored theatre organ- as well as other vocalists and instrumentalists, and you, singing along to many Yuletide favorites! 3 pm at Pella Opera House. Ticket price is $10/ adults, $5/ students.

December 2 UNI MBA Program Information Session

Ready to earn your MBA? Learn about this 28 month program located in Pella starting August 2014 that is designed to accommodate the working professional. December 3 Pella Area Quilters Guild Meeting

Pella Area Quilters Guild will hold their meeting at 6 PM in room 101 at Third Reformed Church, 708 E. 13th St. Pella, IA. It will be their Christmas celebration and Potluck. The program will be presented by Debi Henninger. She explores the fascinating world of the depression-era hobo through the culture's hidden language. Quilter and shop owner Debra G. Henninger has taken more than 55 authentic "hobo signs" and created original quilt blocks and published a book on this subject. Members of the Pella Area Quilters Guild have a wide range quilting abilities and interests and welcomes guests and new members to every meeting.  A time is provided for show and tell of projects.

December 4 Central College presents Student Directed One Acts

Student Directed One Acts in the Kruidenier Studio Theatre, Central College at 7 pm. Catch three short one acts in one night! "Oedi", "White Room of My Remembering" and "Boise, Idaho." December 5 Pella Historical Village presents Lights at Night Holiday Harp Concert

This wonderful Christmas themed concert, featuring Kris De Wild on harp, will take place at both 6:30 and 7:30 pm in the Scholte Church. Doors to the Historical Village will open at 5:30 pm for the Christmas Walk and concert seating. Coffee time will be available throughout both concerts. All members are free and non-members will be $3 per person.

December 5-8 Union Street Players present play "Best Christmas Pageant Ever"

In this hilarious Christmas classic, a couple struggling to put on a church Christmas pageant is faced with casting the Herdman kids- probably to most inventively awful kids in history! This delightful comedy has become a holiday staple for theatres across the United States. Shows are Thursday, December 5 through Saturday, December 7 at 7 pm, and then Sunday December 8 at 2 pm. At the Joan Kuyper Farver Auditorium, Pella Community Center (712 Union Street). Tickets are available at or at the door if still available.

December 6-7 Pella Christmas Tour of Homes

Bring your friends and enjoy the beautiful decor of the season for our 2013 Tour of Homes. With a theme like "All Things Christmas", these homes are sure to get you in the holiday mood and inspire your own projects (many of the decor items are handmade)!  This year's event will feature four homes as well as two historic Pella landmarks, including the former Strawtown Inn Restaurant for Dutch Coffee Time and Artist Exhibition (included in ticket). Tour stops will be open from 10 am to 8 pm Friday, December 6 and 10 am to 5 pm Saturday, December 7 (please note the change of days from years past). Tickets are $15 and are available at the Pella Chamber of Commerce office, 818 Washington Street, as well as the following locations: Best of Thymes, Boat's Home Furnishings, The Cornerstone, Family EyeCare, Gifts on Jefferson, Hy-Vee, Pella Hometown Variety, Silver Lining, Simple Treasures, Thistles, Topaz Hair Styling Salon, and Ulrich's Meat Market.

December 6-7 Festive Whimsy and Fine Art

This is the 2nd Annual Holiday Event! Come enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes of the season while shopping for the perfect gift of art by local artists. This showcase will be held in Strawtown Shoppes, 1109 Washington Street. Parking is located off the alley behind Strawtown Inn. Hours are 10am-8pm December 6, and 10am-5pm December 7. Questions? December 7 Live Nativity Scene at Second Reformed Church

"Step into the Stable" and participate in a live Nativity scene at Second Reformed Church on the corner of Broadway and Liberty from 11 am - 2 pm. Costumes will be available for children to wear as they join Mary, Joseph and live farm animals for a manger moment. Or parents can fill in as Mary and Joseph as families create their own scene. It's a free Christmas photo opportunity as there is no admission charge. Hot chocolate and cookies will also be provided a few steps away inside the church's Gathering Space.

December 8 Tassel Ridge Winery presents Cooking With Iowa Nouveau

Watch Chef Heather from 1-3 pm as she shows you how to make simple yet delicious recipes that are made with or pair perfectly with Tassel Ridge 2013 Iowa Nouveau. Chef Heather will be making Beef Crostini, Sweet Potato Wedges with Barbecue Aioli, and Chicken Breasts with Onion Fig Sauce, along with Tassel Ridge Iowa Mulled Wine. Enjoy samples and take home recipe cards! Buy a bottle of 2013 Iowa Nouveau at this event and receive a complimentary limited-edition 2013 Iowa Nouveau poster.
