Paul Vos

Paul Edwin Vos was born on December 26, 1944, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, a son of Ben and Matilda Jonker Vos. Paul lived his childhood years near Peoria, Iowa where he attended the Peoria Christian Grade School. He graduated from Pella Christian High School in Pella, Iowa with the Class of 1962 and then Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. Paul then became a teacher and the principal at the Leota Christian Grade School in Leota, Minnesota. On October 6, 1967, he was united in marriage with Barbara Ann Hiemstra at the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella. Paul and Barbara relocated near Des Moines, Iowa and were blessed with four children: Gina Pauline, Craig Stephen, Brian John and Michelle Lynn. Paul graduated from Drake Law School at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa in 1971. He began his law practice with John Carter at Mitchellville, Iowa and then started his own law firm, Vos Law Firm. Paul practiced law the remainder of his professional career in Mitchellville and Prairie City, Iowa and was a member of the Iowa Bar Association. Throughout his profession as an attorney, Paul served as a friend and caretaker for many. Paul was diagnosed with cancer in September of 2008 and passed away on Sunday afternoon, October 26, 2008, at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella at the age of 63 years. Paul is survived by his wife of 41 years, Barbara A. Vos, a resident of Pella, Iowa since 1982; their four children: Gina and her husband, David Stansell of Nashville, Tennessee, Craig Vos of West Des Moines, Iowa, Brian Vos and his wife, Becky of Byron Center, Michigan, and Michelle Vos of Chicago, Illinois. Paul loved to visit his five grandchildren who were his pride and joy: Ben, Willa and Dora Stansell, Emma and Ben Vos. Of his original family Paul leaves two brothers: Marvin Vos and his wife, Ruth of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, Ronald Vos and his wife, Nancy of Sioux Center, Iowa, his sister, Beverly Vos Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and his sister-in-law, Lois (Roger) Vos of Newton, Iowa. His extended family includes his parents-in-law: Andrew and Aletta Hiemstra of Pella, Iowa, and the following brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Ronald and Norma Hiemstra of Des Moines, Iowa, Richard and Eileen Hiemstra of Pella, Norma (Hiemstra) Vander Werff of Newton, Iowa, Mark and Cris Hiemstra of Tucson, Arizona, David and Nancy Hiemstra of Circle Pines, Minnesota. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Matilda Vos, his brother, Roger Vos, and a brother-in-law, Larry Vander Werff. Paul loved and was dedicated to the church triumphant. He was currently serving as an Elder at the Covenant Reformed Church in Pella and was involved in many aspects of the church including visiting people in their homes, teaching catechism and caring for the church’s needs. Paul was serving on the board of KCWN Christian radio, which he helped begin. He enjoyed caring for nature and working outdoors. Paul was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother in Christ.
