Robert J. Van Zee

Pella — Robert John Van Zee was born on September 30, 1930 in Jasper County near Prairie City, Iowa. He was the fifth of six children of Martin and Nellie (Meppelink) Van Zee. Bob, as he was known, received his formal education in the Prairie City, Iowa schools and graduated there in 1948.

After graduation, Robert’s family moved to Edinburgh, Texas and he joined them as they grew cotton and oranges. In 1950 Bob entered the United States Air Force and faithfully served his country until his discharge in 1954.

On August 19, 1955 he was united in marriage with Shirley A. Leydens at Pella. After marriage they made their home for a short time in the Houston, Texas area and then moved to Des Moines, where Bob attended the American Business Institute. They returned to Pella and Bob became an employee of the Veteran’s Administration in Knoxville, Iowa, a job he held for decades. Shirley passed away on August 8, 1990. On February 9, 2008 he was united in marriage with Delores J. Springer. Bob and Dee made their home in Pella.

He passed away on Friday, April 5, 2013, at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Des Moines. He attained the age of 82 years.

Bob is survived by his wife, Delores Van Zee and his son, Jeffrey Van Zee of Los Angeles, CA, a sister, Ruth Davenport of Boerne, TX; three brothers, George and his wife Carol Van Zee of Pella, Herman and his wife Kathryn Van Zee of Prairie City and Donald and his wife Dorothy Van Zee of Hiawatha, Iowa and a brother-in-law, Robert Erlandson of Delaware, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, his parents and a sister Joan Erlandson.  Private services were held at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella.  

Van Dyk- Duven Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
