Jennie Bogaard

Pella — Johanna Francena Fraanje was born in Kruniningen, the providence of Zeeland, the Netherlands on December 29, 1917, the daughter of Jacob and Susanna (Verhaugen) Fraanje.  Jennie and her brother Doris along with their parents traveled to the United States in 1924 and arrived at Ellis Island.  They traveled through New York and on to the Pella, Iowa area where they settled on a farm.  Jennie, as she became known, grew up west of Pella and attended Silver Grove Country Grade School.  As a young lady, she worked as a hired housekeeper for several women in the community.   Jennie met Herman Bogaard one night as he drove around the Pella square which sparked their romance, and led to their marriage on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1940, at her parent’s farm home.  To this union five children were born:  Larry Wayne, Charles Jay, Stanley Eugene, Susan Nelda, and Janna Francine. Jennie  was a devoted homemaker, faithfully providing for the needs of her family. She always had a large garden, canning for her family, and was a helper to Herman on the farm.  Jennie and Herman lived on his parents, Cornielus and Nellie (Van Roelder) Bogaard,  home place northeast of Leighton, Iowa most of their married life.  Jennie was an active, faithful member of the Ebenezer Reformed Church where she enjoyed Lydia and Dorcas Ladies Aid.  She also was involved in Scott Homemakers Club.  Jennie and Herman enjoyed visiting and playing cards with their neighbors and friends.  On September 17, 1994, Herman passed away following a two year encounter with skin cancer.  Very soon following his death Jennie moved into Fair Haven East in Pella.  She remained a resident there until August 2009, when she became a resident at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa, Iowa.  She adapted so well to adjustments at Fair Haven and the Care Center and was loved by many of the staff.  She had fun teaching them the Dutch language.  Early Thursday morning, August 9, 2012, Jennie passed away at the Oskaloosa Care Center at the age of 94 years, 7 months and 10 days.  Jennie was a special mother to her children and Sunday Evenings was a special time when her children and grandchildren gathered at their home after church where "Mom/Grandma" always provided the family with coffee time.
