Pella —

Alice Carolyn Postma was born on October 6, 1921, at Knoxville, Iowa. She attended school at Otley, Iowa, and Monroe, Iowa and graduated from Pella High School in Pella, Iowa with the Class of 1940.
On June 12, 1943, she was united in marriage with Willard Leroy Kaldenberg at Pella. Alice taught country school at the Battle Ridge Country School for 2 years and then worked at the J.C. Penny Store, the Farmers Union and V & R Grocery Store in Pella. Alice and Willard then lived in Norman, Oklahoma and Jacksonville, Florida while Willard served in active military service with the United States Navy.
During this time Alice was also employed with the Navy and following Willard’s discharge in 1946 they returned to Pella. They then started farming and farmed south of Pella until 1964. Alice was then employed at the Rolscreen Company as a mail and literature clerk for 27 years. Following their retirement in 1983 they became residents at the Pella Manor. Alice and Willard were longtime, faithful members of the First Reformed Church where she was active with the Guild and Circles.
They were grassroots members of the Pella Chamber of Commerce and Alice served on the Pella Community Hospital Auxiliary and as a windmill volunteer for the Pella Historical Society.
For nine years they spent their winters in Arizona and enjoyed camping and motorcycling together. Alice and Willard were enroute to visit her late mother, Ione (Risewick) Postma, when they were involved in a two car auto accident near Otley, Iowa on June 25, 1992.
Willard passed away a few hours later in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 70 years. Alice remained a very active, spirited, determined person. When she celebrated her 90th birthday she experienced her latest wish for a hot air balloon ride. On Wednesday evening, May 22, 2013, she passed away at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House at the age of 91 years. Alice is survived by her sister, Darlene Stewart, of Monroe, Iowa; along with three generations of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard L. Kaldenberg; her parents, Richard and Ione Postma; a brother, Harold Postma, who died at a young age and her brother, Hubert Postma; her parents-in-law, John and Jeanette (Hasselman) Kaldenberg; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Viola (Kaldenberg) and Robert Heerema.
