Shirley Norton

Pella — Shirley Mae (Statler) Norton, of Pella, Iowa, passed away on December 26, 2013, at the Comfort House in Pella after a short illness.

Shirley was born in Brighton, Iowa, on August 30, 1923.  She was educated in Jefferson County rural schools, graduating from Lockridge High School in 1940.  After graduation she worked in grocery stores at Four Corners and Lockridge.  Later she moved to Fairfield where she worked at Vans Super Value.  While in Fairfield she met Russell Loraine Norton.  Russell served in the Navy Seabees overseas during WWII.  He returned in 1945 and married Shirley at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on April 11, 1948.  They made their home in Fairfield.

One daughter, Cheryl Mae (Sherry), was born on June 1, 1949.  Russell and Shirley were loving and devoted to each other as well as to Sherry.  As a family they enjoyed outdoor activities such as camping and boating.  They spent a lot of time watching barges on the Mississippi River.  Shirley was active in Sherry’s activities.  She was proud to be a choir mother at the Methodist Church and a Girl Scout leader.  She was always available to help at all school activities.  Shirley enjoyed doing crafts and cooking, especially trying new recipes.  She and Russell were active in the Western Square Dance Club in Fairfield.  She also was part of the United Methodist Women.

Shirley served as a bookkeeper at the Fairfield HyVee for eighteen years.  She retired in 1981 when she and Russell moved to Pella to be near their only granddaughter, Carrie Lynn Westra.  Later Russell suffered a stroke, and Shirley took care of him at home for seven years until his death in 2008.  They were married sixty years.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Hattie Mae (Lynn) and Roy S. Statler; husband Russell Norton; brothers-in-law Wayne Keller and Donald Rich; and an infant sister.  She is survived by daughter Cheryl Mae (Sherry) and son-in-law Steve of Pella; granddaughter Carrie (Westra) Schwab and husband Martin of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; great-granddaughter Abbie Lynn Schwab; sisters Mary Rich and Faith Keller; and brother Robert Statler and his wife Marlene; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 31, 2013, at the Pella Garden Chapel Funeral Home.  Burial took place at the Oakwood Cemetery.  The Garden Chapel Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
