Seymour Zylstra

The Chronicle

Pella — Seymour Zylstra was the sixth of twelve children that were born to Rienk and Johanna Christina (Rolffs) Zylstra. He was born on March 15, 1928, at Lynnville, Iowa and graduated from the Sully High School in Sully, Iowa.

Seymour acquired the nickname of “Zeke” early in life and this name accompanied him the remainder of his lifetime. During the Korean Conflict, Zeke was inducted into the United States Army in April, 1951. That same year on August 13, 1951, he and Carla Rae Kooistra were united in marriage at the home of her parents.  He was discharged in April, 1953, and transferred to the Army Reserve. Zeke remained a very patriotic person.

Following his discharge he began farming near Sully.  He later was employed at Vermeer Corporation in Pella, Iowa.  His last gainful employment was with Janco Industries in Sully. Zeke followed his grandchildren’s activities faithfully and supported them in every way. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye sports fan, enjoyed golfing and was an ‘orange’ toy tractor collector.

On Memorial Day, May 27, 2013, he passed away at the age of 85 years. He will be greatly missed by his many friends, his wife, Carla, and his family. They and their families are Craig Warren and Linda (Jansen) Zylstra of Sully, Jason and Amber Zylstra, Jennifer and Jason Lowry, Hayden Lowry, Paige Zylstra, Curt Allen and Donna (Hofer) Zylstra of Sully, Dana and Dustin Dunsbergen, Joshua, Mason, Carter, Reese Dunsbergen, Brandon Zylstra, Logan Vos, Becca Vos, Sheri Diane and Doug Huyser of Sully, Shawn and ChyAnne Huyser, Dylann, Jager, Tatum, Chayse Huyser, Jeremy Huyser, Lindsey and Derek De Haan,                               Isabella, Grace De Haan, Kathy Lynn and Rod Hoegh of Urbandale,  Dustin Huyser, Joel Huyser, Dawn, Danielle, Dana, Robby, Daira and Reggie Hoegh and families, Susan Gail and Mike Jansen of Sully, Corey and Erin Jansen, Harrison, Miles Jansen, Ryan and Brittney Jansen, Nora Jansen and Troy Jansen.

Darl Huyser and Deb Steenhoek remained a part of Zeke’s life.

Of his original family he leaves three brothers: Quintin Zylstra and his wife, Alice, of Pella, Iowa, Rolland (Duke) Zylstra of Sully, Arthur Zylstra and his wife,  Verna, of Pella;  and his four sisters:  Joan (Joey) Bandstra of Pella, Bertha and her husband, James Talsma of Colfax, Iowa, Revena and her husband, Frank Gritters, Linda and her husband, Donald Rus,  of Pella; and four sisters-in-law: JoAnn (Ludolph) Zylstra of Grinnell, Iowa, Evelyn(Ivan) Zylstra of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Harriet (Robert) Zylstra, and Joyce (Larry Kooistra) and her husband, Bruce Nikkel, of Pella. Zeke was preceded in death by his parents, Rienk and Johanna Zylstra; four brothers:  Martin Zylstra and his wife, Carol, Ludolph Zylstra, Ivan Zylstra, Robert Zylstra, his sister-in-law, Pat (Duke) Zylstra and his brother-in-law, John Bandstra; his parents-in-law, Bernard and Nellie (Van Genderen) Kooistra; and a brother-in-law, Larry  Kooistra.

Zeke was baptized and made profession of his faith at the Sully Christian Reformed Church in Sully where he remained a lifelong member.

He was also a member of the Fred Slayden American Legion Post No. 363 at Monroe, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 31, 2013 at the Sully Christian Reformed Church. 

Arrangements were handled by Van Dyk – Duven Funeral Home.
