Marilyn DeVries

The Chronicle

Pella — Marilyn Joyce Stursma DeVries was born on March 25, 1933, in Pella, Iowa, to William C. and Leona (Rus) Stursma.  She passed away at The Cottages in Pella on Friday, May 9, 2014, at the age of eighty-one.

Marilyn graduated from Pella Christian Grade School and High School.  On July 28, 1952, she was united in marriage with Vernon DeVries at the home of her parents.  They were blessed with five children: Michael, David, Carla, Ruth, and Thomas.  Marilyn and her husband farmed in the Knoxville area for many years.

She was baptized and made profession of faith at the Protestant Reformed Church in Pella.  She later became a member of the Covenant Reformed Church in Pella, where she was a member of the Ladies Aid Society.  She was also actively involved in the Crossroads Prison Ministry.  Marilyn loved being a homemaker and caring for her family.  She enjoyed caring for her grandchildren, crocheting, gardening and canning, baking, Bible reading, and Bible studies.

Those left to cherish her memory are: her five children and their families; Reverend Michaael (Dawn) DeVries of Kalamazoo, Michigan, David (Laurel) DeVries of Knoxville, Iowa, Carla (Will) Bennett of Goodyear, Arizona, Ruth Kuiper of Knoxville, Iowa, and Thomas (Jill) DeVries of Pella; her sister, Pat (Gene) Kamerick of Pella; sisters-in-law: Lillian (Ralph) Van Roekel and Alberdeen (Dan) Van Wyk; brother-in-law, Loren De Zwarte.

Marilyn was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Vernon, in 1992; her two brothers, Norman Stursma and Donald Stursma; and her sister-in-law, Beulah De Zwarte.

Marilyn will always be remembered as a humble and caring Mom and Grandma.  

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the Covenant Reformed Church in Pella.  Burial took place at the Oakwood Cemetery. The Garden Chapel Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
