Joseph J. Vigneri

Pella — Joseph J. Vigneri, 96, died on January 13, 2014, of heart failure.  Joseph was born in St. Joseph, MO on November 30, 1917; He graduated from Christian Brothers High School.  He worked at Safeway and attended business school.   During WW II, he joined the Army, stationed in Seward, Alaska, where he managed a medical clinic on the base.    After he returned home, he began a 32-year career as manager of Manning’s Drive-In Grocery.

Joseph met Angelene Dumitrov.  They married in 1947 and had three children: Mary (Gary) Boles), Pella Iowa, Phillip, New York City and Thomas (Goldie) Harrodsburg, KY.  He has six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, with another on the way.

Joseph was a life-long member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.  He was very involved in the parish.  He was the “sound man” in charge of the audio equipment.

Joseph enjoyed wood working and gardening.  He built an S-Gauge model railroad lay out, and all of his children enjoyed running the trains with him.  He loved music, dancing and going to dances at the Senior Center with his wife.

Due to health issues in 2008, Joseph and Angelene moved to Pella, Iowa, to be closer to their daughter, Mary.   Angelene died in 2009, and Joseph was devoted to her care.  They were married for 63 years, she was truly the love of his life.  Upon moving to Pella, Joseph became a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where he will be missed.

Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and an infant sister.  He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 20, 2014 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.  A prayer service was held prior to the Mass.  Interment will followed at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
