Corinne Elizabeth Shetterly Peterson went to her heavenly home on Monday, April 8, 2013, at 7:31 PM at the Comfort House in Pella, Iowa, surrounded by her loving family.
Corinne Elizabeth Wolfe was born in Rippey, Iowa on June 11, 1924, to Clifford and Flora (Weddle) Wolfe of Perry, Iowa. She was the fifth child of seven siblings.
Corinne went to school in Van Meter, Iowa where in high school she enjoyed playing on the girls' basketball team. She also met the young man that was to become her husband, Henry Victor Shetterly. They were united in marriage June 2, 1942, in Bethany, Missouri. To this union they were blessed with four children, in five years: Donivan Max, Victor Lee, Sonja May, and Teresa Belle.
As a young girl, Corinne was privileged to receive training in dance as a student and as an assistant teacher with Betty Mae Harris Dance Schools in Perry and Boone, Iowa. She later operated her own studios of dance in the towns of Stuart, Adel, Earlham, Van Meter, Dallas Center, Grundy Center and Pella, Iowa. She taught hundreds of children and young adults, over several decades, from the 1950's- 1980's organizing and presenting annual dance recitals.
During this busy life, in the 1950's and early 60's, she amazingly organized "The Shetterly Kids", her four children, into a singing and dancing quartet/act. In their beginning they ranged in age from 3 years to 8 years old. They sang and danced their way into the hearts of many Central Iowa communities, entertaining for numerous local clubs, churches, and organizations. The Shetterly Kids were featured many times on KRNT-TV with Bill Riley's Teen Town, and appeared with and for his program at the Iowa State Fairs, where they became accustomed to and delighting the fair crowds with their 4-part harmony songs and dancing. They won many Sprouts awards. They received their passion for singing from their parents, as the family traveled by car on Sundays to their Grandparents' homes , for their often weekly visits, to Winterset and Perry, Iowa. Corinne and Henry coaxed the children to sing every time and everywhere they traveled by car. It is and was, according retrospectively to their children, one of the greatest gifts they were given ......the gift of Music. After Henry passed away on December 21, 1981, at the age of 58 years, Corinne was blessed with another love and blessing of a loving man, Charles “Lane” Peterson, who was also widowed. They fell in love and were married December 30, 1984, in DeSoto, Iowa.
To this union Lane added his three adult children: Pat, Chuck, and Kristie, as well as their 6 children. They lived and loved, and enjoyed their life and love until he went on his journey home on March 14, 2008. Corinne was a gardener, and always enjoyed growing, and preserving vegetables. She was a wonderful cook, also. Delighting everyone with her wonderful family recipes, including her famous homemade chicken and noodles. Family get-togethers at the Peterson farm were the delight of everyone, especially the grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Picnicking, four-wheeling, hiking down to the river were the joys of the times. On special occasions like 80th birthdays, you were promised some music, and probably entertainment, which might include a tap dance routine, by Corinne. She also sometimes entertained her senior center friends with a Hawaiian song and dance to which everyone was delighted. Her smile was contagious and as beautiful as she was. A song she sang to her children in days past included the lyrics: "So let the sun shine in, face it with a grin, smilers never lose, and frowners never win. So let the sun shine in, face it with a grin, Open up your heart and let the sun shine in." She was loved by all. Encouraged by all. Unconditional love was her virtue. A blessed and giving woman…
Survivors include her children from two long-standing marriages: Don Shetterly (Lynette Brown-Shetterly)-Sylvania, Ohio, Victor Shetterly (Pam)-Pella, Iowa, Sonja Discher (Paul)-Bloomington, Minnesota, Teresa Van Zante (David)-Mason City, Iowa, Pat Cron (Bart)- Ft. Collins, Colorado, Chuck Peterson (Sue)- Osage Beach, Missouri, Kristie Manning (Al)-Adel, Iowa; 9 grandchildren & 27 great-grandchildren (and one on the way); a younger sister, Dorothy Ory and a sister-in-law, Opal Wiggins both of Winterset, Iowa.
Corinne was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, and siblings: Euva Cheek, Zola Harrison, Alvis Wolfe, Ted Wolfe and Dixie Wolfe; along with many wonderful friends of her and her husbands’ friends.
She will indeed be missed. But with the promise that we will be united one day for eternity.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 12, 2013 at the Third Reformed Church in Pella. Arrangements were handled by Van Dyk – Duven Funeral Home.
