Shirley was born in Pella, Iowa to John and Ella (Nieuwsma) Roose on February 25, 1940. A graduate of Pella Christian High School, she attended Evangelical School of Nursing in Marshalltown. Her classmate and future sister-in-law, Carol Luthe, introduced Shirley to her brother, Jim Cormicle. Shirley and Jim were married on August 12, 1961 in Peoria, Iowa. Identical twin sons, Warren and William, were born as Jim finished his engineering degree at Iowa State University. With babies in the back seat, Shirley and Jim moved to Flint, Michigan, where Jim started his career with the Buick Motor Division of GM. Shirley practiced nursing in a wide variety of settings and maintained her license her entire life. A daughter, Sheryl, was born in Flint. The family attended Court Street United Methodist Church, and relationships formed through activities and service there created their “home away from home”. Regular visits to Iowa kept family close and drew all three children back to Iowa for college. When Jim passed away as a young man in 1983, Shirley began a new chapter in her life. She pursued a bachelor’s degree from Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa and became increasingly involved in the mission work of the church. She ultimately heeded the call to full-time ministry and obtained her Master of Divinity degree from Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta in 1994. She was ordained into the Detroit Conference of the United Methodist Church and served for 9 years in a variety of roles at churches in Linden, Argentine, and Flint, Michigan. Her true vocation was health ministry, caring for both the body and the soul. She retired from formal ministry in 2003, but continued to devote loving care to her cherished granddaughter, family and friends. Shirley also enjoyed traveling and ventured near and far, including Haiti, Liberia, Estonia, and even Antarctica. Shirley raised a beautiful family and touched many hearts. Her great spirit will live on in our hearts.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Warren of Waterford and William of Flint, Michigan; her daughter Sheryl (Mark) Knox of East Lansing, Michigan; sister Betty (Peter) Jochems of Peoria, Iowa, brother Afton (Rita) Roose of Farmersville, TX; sister-in-law Carol (John) Luthe of Marshalltown, Iowa; granddaughter Katherine Knox of East Lansing, Michigan; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, John and Ella Roose, husband, James Cormicle, and nephew James Jochems.
