The Chronicle

Pella — Mary Viretta Wisse was born on April 25, 1915, to Jacob and Lola Mullins Van Zante in Monroe, Iowa.  She went to her heavenly home on Thursday morning, August 23, 2012.

Viretta received her education in the Pella Schools and later attended Central College. On August 18, 1942, she was united in marriage with James Wisse.

She was a teacher and substitute teacher for many years.  She was the librarian at the Pella Public Library during the depression.  She also worked at Vera’s Beauty Salon, Central College Student Support Services, and volunteered at the VA Hospital.  Viretta was always very proud of the fact that she held a job since she was 12 years old.

Viretta was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church in Pella.  She was also a member of the Christian Women’s Temperance Union and served on the Marion County Election Board.  She enjoyed gardening, reading, crossword puzzles, sewing, politics, and staying up to date on current events by faithfully reading the newspaper.  She loved sitting on her front porch.  She often visited her parents’ graves at the cemetery.

Viretta was loved by many.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James, in 2004.

A memorial service was held Monday, August 27, 2012, at the First Baptist Church in Pella.  Inurnment took place at the Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.  The Garden Chapel Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
