Ellen Van Zante

Pella — Ellen Elscott was the second child born to John and Maggie (Brand) Elscott. She was born on March 24, 1918, near Taintor, Iowa. Ellen received a grade school education at the Case Country Grade School near Taintor. Prior to her marriage she worked in various homes cooking and caring for young children. On October 22, 1941,she was united in marriage with Francis Mac Van Zante at her parents farm home. To this union three children were born: a son, Norman Lee, and two daughters: Carlene Mae and Louise Fern. Ellen and Francis lived on his parents’ farm, Albert D. and Elsie (Mc Reynolds) Van Zante, north of Pella, Iowa in Jasper County where Ellen worked side by side with Francis. She enjoyed being outside and helping out wherever needed. Francis built their home on the farm where they lived until retiring and moving into Pella in 1978. They made their home at 308 Union Street. Ellen and Francis enjoyed camping at the Iowa State Fair and traveled extensively. They had visited all 50 states and several foreign countries. Ellen was a longtime, faithful member of the Otley Reformed Church in Otley, Iowa. She valued her family and always had time to lend a helping hand. Francis passed away on May 17, 2001. The following year Ellen moved into an apartment in Pella where she resided until becoming a resident at Hilltop Manor and Pella Community Long-Term Care. Since 2011 she had been a resident at Griffin Care and Rehabilitation Center in Knoxville, Iowa and passed away on Friday morning August 24, 2012, at Knoxville Hospital & Clinics at the age of 94 years. Those left to remember her life and spirit are her three children, their spouses, eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. They and their families are: Norman and Mary (Woody) Van Zante of Pella, Iowa, Carlene and Bernard Van Der Pol of Sully, Iowa, Louise and Brian Wilson of Monroe, Iowa. Of her original family Ellen leaves her older sister, Jennie (Harold) Geurts presently of Grinnell, Iowa; her brother-in-law, Chadwick (Irene Elscott) Ver Ploeg of Pella; and a sister-in-law, Minnie (Van Zante) Miller of Newton, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis M. Van Zante; her parents: John and Maggie Elscott; two brothers: Elmer Elscott, Glen Elscott and his wife, Verna; three sisters: Irene Ver Ploeg, Gladys and her husband, James R. Renaud, Grace and her husband, John H. Renaud; a brother-in-law, Harold Geurts; her parents-in-law: Albert D. and Elsie Van Zante; and two sisters-in-law, Agnes (Van Zante) and her husband Carl Shannon, Cordelia (Van Zante) and her husband, Myron W. Nollen.  Funeral services were held on Monday, August 27, 2012 at the Otley Reformed Church.  Arrangements were handled by Van Dyk –Duven Funeral Home in Pella.
