Gladys Alydia Ver Meer was born on September 26, 1918, at the home of her parents, Antonie and Johanna (Koldenbrander) Ver Meer, at Pella, Iowa. She was the oldest of five children. Gladys completed her formal education after finishing the eighth grade at Lincoln Elementary School in Pella. She worked for the family of Rev. Frank De Jong as a house attendant, doing cooking and cleaning duties for them. Gladys was then united in marriage with Cornie Vos on February 13, 1941 at her parent’s home. They were blessed with three children: Sue Ann, Rick Lee and Keith Loren. The couple moved to a farm northwest of Leighton, Iowa and began their marriage by living in a chicken coop, due to the loss of their future home by a fire just weeks before they were married. Cornie was then drafted into the United States Army which required them to move together to Wilmington, NC where Cornie served his country from 1942 to 1943. They relocated back to a farm northwest of Leighton where they remained for the next 30 years farming until their retirement. In 1973 they moved into Pella, and made their home at 412 Lincoln Street, where they still reside today. On Sunday morning, December 2, 2012, she passed away at her home at the advanced age of 94 years.
Gladys is survived by her husband, Cornie; their three children and their families Sue and Glen De Bruin of Pella, Jim and Ruth De Bruin of Pella, Sharla, Zachary, Daniel, Alyson, Sharon and Mike Vande Noord of Pella, Joshua, Jacob, Carol and Jay Kime of Pella, Katelyn, Cody, Rick and Carolyn (Meinders) Vos of Pella, Roger and Meri Vos of Des Moines, Cheryl and Eric Van Wyk of Remsen, Jalen, Jenna, Jacie, Cindy and Doug Van Donselaar of Pella, Shane, Cheyanne, Cole, Cooper, Keith Vos and Christine (Smithburg) Briggs of Pella, Pam and Jon Klyn of Pella, Ethan, Taylor, Issalena and Wes Van Weelden of New Sharon, Kylie.
Gladys leaves a brother, Bernard and Dorothy Ver Meer of Pella, and a sister, Janice and Loren Vander Wert of Pella, and three sisters-in-law, Pat (Byron) Ver Meer of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Alice (Melvin) Ver Meer of Pella, and Ann (Vos) De Boer of Oskaloosa. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Byron and Melvin Ver Meer. Gladys was baptized and was a professing member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella. She was active in the Jr. Helping Hands Society and the We Neighbors Club. Gladys enjoyed providing cookies for the Veteran’s meetings and activities during Veteran’s and Memorial Day. She also liked to help serve with the Pella Christian High School Auxiliary. Gladys was a dedicated in making quilts, afghans, embroidery and keepsakes for her family to treasure. She had attended every Tulip Time in Pella since it began. Gladys loved to bake and cook, her family will especially miss the cookies she made by the dozens each week. She was dedicated to her family in every regard and they will miss her dearly but know she is now with her Lord.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella. Arrangements were handled by Van Dyk – Duven Funeral Home.
