The Chronicle

Pella —

Anna Mae Vink was born on December 26, 1929, in the rural Pella, Iowa area to John and Anna (Schuring) Vink, Jr. She had one younger sister, Junella.  A
nna Mae attended the Bunker Hill Country School near Pella through the 8th grade.  On September 2, 1948, she and Peter James Slycord, one of nine children born to Leonard and Elizabeth (De Koning) Slycord, were united in marriage. They were blessed with four sons: John Lee, William Jay, Ronald Alan and Donald Wayne, and enjoyed sixty-one years of marriage.
Anna Mae and Pete lived on her parents home place east of Pella. They later built a new home there and made the vow of living together until death do us part. They were privileged to do just that in their own home until October, 2009, when they became residents at the Westridge Nursing & Rehab  Center in Knoxville, Iowa.
For many years, Anna Mae and Pete enjoyed camping with friends where they spent many good times sitting around the camp fire. They especially loved playing cards. They also enjoyed traveling to Branson, Missouri, Colorado and Canada and thoroughly enjoyed the beauty of God’s creation.
Pete passed away on November 9, 2009, at the age of 85 years and Anna Mae remained a resident at Westridge where she attended various social groups, parties, Bingo, and entertainment held at the facility. Anna Mae passed away on Saturday evening, January 4, 2014, at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella at the age of 84 years.
She had a great love for her family and others. Her sons, grandchildren and extended family meant so much to her and she was totally devoted to them. They are John and Marie (Bentley) Slycord of  Knoxville, Bill and Florence (Dickman) Slycord of Pella, Eric and Candy Slycord, Angela and Chris Terlouw, Samuel, Abby Terlouw, (Ronald and Deborah Hammer Slycord), Amanda and Brady Van Maanen, Riley Shepard, Ayla Van Maanen, Don Slycord of Pella, Morgan Slycord, Meredith Slycord.
Anna Mae leaves her sister, Junella (Myron) Beerends of Pella; a sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law: Magolena (Slycord) and Robert Furst of Newburg, Iowa and Andrew Slycord of Marshalltown, Iowa; along with many nieces and nephews. Anna Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Pete; her son, Ronald and his wife, Deb Slycord; her parents, John and Anna Vink; her brother-in-law, Myron Beerends; her parents-in-law, Leonard and Elizabeth Slycord; and the following sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-law: Annie (Slycord) Hol, Katie (Slycord) Petersma/Vander Horst, Cornie Slycord and Walter Slycord.
Anna Mae was always giving of herself and loved serving others. She loved giving others gifts even when she had little to give. Her main passion was cooking and baking for others and she was excellent at both. Everyone loved her home-made noodles and chicken and at Christmas time her hand-made candies and cookies. Her family will miss her friendly smile and kindness and the love she had for others. Most of all we admire her for her strong and steadfast faith  through tragedy, pain and difficult times.
She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella and her ultimate hope was in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and to spend eternity with Him.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella.  Van Dyk – Duven Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
