Hilda Roorda

Pella — Hilda Miller was the first of eight children that were born to Joseph and Lydia (Beyerle) Miller. Her father was born in southern Russia and her mother in Romania. Hilda was born on March 21, 1912, in Ree, North Dakota where she received her grade school education. The family later moved to Spokane, Washington and other areas on the west coast. As a young girl Hilda grew up and worked in Glendale, California. While residing in California Hilda met Marion H. Roorda, an Army veteran. They were united in marriage on September 17, 1955, in Burbank, California. Following their marriage they returned to Pella, Iowa where Marion was employed at Boat & Boatsma, now known as Boat Furniture, for 25 years. Marion passed away February 19, 1981, following a lengthy illness at the age of 72 years. Hilda remained faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ and continued to display her sense of humor. She thoroughly enjoyed her years in Pella, Iowa and in April, 2011, became a resident at the Griffin Nursing & Rehab Center in Knoxville, Iowa. Hilda passed away there on Sunday morning, September 16, 2012, having recently observed her 100th birthday with her sister, Eldora June Longshore of Santa Paula, California, and her two brothers: Harold Miller of Burbank, California and Ralph Miller of Littleton, Colorado. Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, Marion H. Roorda; her parents, Joseph and Lydia Miller; four sisters: Erna Findley, Olga Crawley, Linda Williams and Alice Lane; her parents-in-law:  Henry and Mary (Vos) Roorda; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Roorda; and three brothers-in-law: John Roorda, Charles Roorda and Paul Roorda.  Hilda was baptized as an infant in the Lutheran Church in North Dakota and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour in Walla Walla, Washington in 1940.  Hilda was in happy fellowship with those gathered to the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ at Pella, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Friday, September 21, 2012 at the Van Dyk – Duven Funeral Home in Pella.
