Mae Koopmans

Pella —

Cornelia Mae Aalbers was born on May 14, 1922 near Cordova, Iowa, the daughter of Gysbert and Gertrude Sedrel Aalbers.  She attended the Liberty Corner Country School near Pella, Iowa.  Mae, as she was known, grew up on a turkey farm.  
On October 16, 1947 she was united in marriage with William "Bill" Austin Koopmans and to this union two children were born:  CaRita Kay and Curtis Dean.  Mae and Bill lived all their married life in Pella.  Mae worked as a waitress and cook at West End Cafe, MaidRite and for the Pella Community Schools.  She later worked at the Rolscreen Company until her retirement in 1984.  
Bill passed away unexpectedly on February 11, 1972, at the young age of 48 years while they were in Honolulu, Hawaii to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.  F
ollowing his death Mae remained active attending ball games of her children and grandchildren.  She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, walking, volunteering and especially spending time with her family and friends.  She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church where for many years she donated supplies to help make vetbolens for the Tulip Time Festival.  
On Thursday morning, April 25, 2013, she passed away, at the age of 90, in the Long Term Care Unit of Pella Regional Health Center where she had been a resident since March, 2007.  Mae is survived by her two children and their spouses: CaRita and Rich Pierson of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Curt and Anita Koopmans of Marion, Iowa, four grandchildren; Shannon (Jon) Alvarado of McKinney, Texas and Chris (Kelly) Pierson of Leighton, Iowa, Shane Koopmans and Tasha Koopmans of Marion, Iowa and two great grandchildren:  Jayden Alvarado and Tegan Pierson.  Mae was the last surviving member of her original family and was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Koopmans, her parents, Gysbert and Gertrude Aalbers; and her brother, Marion Aalbers and his wife, Beatrice.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Pella.   Arrangements were handled by Van Dyk – Duven Funeral Home.
