Gertrude Van Zee

Pella — Gertrude H. VanZee, 89, passed from this life on April 1, 2013.  Funeral Services were held April 5, at Meredith Drive Reformed Church, 5128 Meredith Drive, Des Moines, Iowa.  A graveside service was held at Graceland Cemetery in Pella, Iowa.

Gertrude was born September 11, 1923, to Henry and Jennie (Klein) Hoekstra.  The family lived on a farm east of Pella, where Gertrude grew up and attended Pella area schools.  On October 14, 1943 she was united in marriage to William VanZee.  Gertrude and William lived in Pella their first five years of marriage.  Gertrude worked at Pella Rolscreen before the couple moved to Des Moines, Iowa.  To this union two children were born:  Joyce Ogren of Crystal Lake, IL., and Willis Van Zee of Johnston, IA. Gertrude devoted her life to being a homemaker and mother.  She was a member of Meredith Drive Reform Church and enjoyed many activities such as the quilters group.   She loved spending time with her four grandchildren, Sarah and Nathan Ogren and Scott and Dustin Van Zee.

Gertrude is survived by her husband, two children, four grandchildren, one brother, Gerald Hoekstra of Pella and a sister,  Mary Rozenboom of Johnston.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Alma Dykstra.
