Dorothy De Vries was born to Siebren and Jacoba (Stouwie) De Vries on July 13, 1914, at Pella, Iowa. She attended public and Christian grade schools in Pella and Peoria, Iowa and then began doing housework for others. She made profession of her faith in the Protestant Reformed Church in Pella. On February 8, 1939, she was united in marriage with Cecil De Vries in Peoria, Iowa. Cecil was a son of Fedde J. and Janke (Smedes) De Vries and was born on August 28, 1900, in Harkema-Opeinde, Achtkarsepelen, Friesland. Their marriage was blessed with four children: Frederick John, Stanley James, Geneva Ann and Jerry Lee. Dorothy experienced a deep loss and sense of loneliness when her son, Jerry, passed away on January 1, 1950, at the age of two years. Cecil and Dorothy farmed near Peoria until 1946 at which time they moved into Pella. Cecil continued as a livestock buyer and later worked at the Rolscreen Company until his retirement in 1960. Following the death of her husband, Cecil, on November 18, 1985, Dorothy continued to live in Pella. Since its organization and until the time of her death on Friday, August 24, 2012, Dorothy was a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella where she was a longtime member of the Willing Workers Society. Dorothy used her quilting skills to make many, many quilts which have gone to Mississippi and other far flung places to provide warmth, beauty and comfort to people in need. Dorothy loved to garden and cook and will always be remembered for her homemade buns, her ham sandwiches, potato salad and freshly baked pies. She was a hard worker and passed on that satisfaction in work accomplished. Her grandchildren loved to visit her and they fondly remember that Grandma would get her fine tea cups and saucers and would let them pick from her spoon collection on the wall. They would then share fancy tea and homebaked goodies. She passed away at Jefferson Place in Pella where she had been a resident since July, 2004. Dorothy was a loving mother and devoted herself to caring for and praying for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren throughout her long life of 98 years. Her prayers have changed the lives of her family and guided them to follow the same God she so loved. She now continues that ministry of love and attention from the glorious perspective of heaven.
She is survived by three children, eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren: Frederick J. De Vries and his wife, Haz, of White Rock, New Mexico and their three children: Jerry Lee, Karen Sue and David Jay, Rev. Stanley J. De Vries and his wife, Ruth, of Eagan Minnesota and their sons: Timothy Jon, Aaron Shawn and Jonathan Derek, Geneva and her husband, Ralph C.
