Catherine Vander Wiel

Catherine Verschuure was born on May 19, 1920, to Peter and Adrajana (Kleinendorst) Verschuure at their farm home near Tracy, Iowa. She attended elementary schools in the Tracy, Otley and Prairie City, Iowa areas, graduating from Prairie City High School in 1938. Catherine taught rural schools for six years in the Monroe and Pella, Iowa areas before her marriage to Frank Vander Wiel on February 23, 1945. She later returned to teaching and continued as a kindergarten teacher at Pella Christian Grade School in Pella for 25 years until her retirement in 1982.

Catherine passed away on Saturday evening, September 1, 2012, in the Long Term Care Unit at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella at the age of 92 years. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Cornelia (Tunis) Verschuure of Pella; and her brother-in-law, Harry (Cornelia Verschuure) Tibboel of Des Moines, Iowa.

Of the Vander Wiel family, she is survived by sisters-in-law: Mae Vander Wiel, Johanna (Gerald) Vander Wiel and Bernice (Henry Vander Wiel) Brush all of Pella, Iowa; Marjorie and her husband, Charles Keur of Muskegon, Michigan; and a brother-in-law, Ray Vander Wiel and his wife, Shirley, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Catherine is also survived by many, very dear nieces and nephews.

Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Vander Wiel, who departed this life on November 17, 1977, at the age of  57 years; her parents, her father, Peter Verschuure, on January 25, 1957 and her mother, Jane Verschuure on June 3, 1973; a brother, Andrew VerSchuure who also died on November 17, 1977; a sister, Jeanette (Simon) Van Dusseldorp on July 30, 2002; a brother, Tunis Verschuure on April 30, 1997; a sister, Cornelia Tibboel on September 9, 2011;  a sister, Mattie Verschuure, who died at the age of two years; three brothers who died in infancy; her brother-in-law, Simon Van Dusseldorp; and her sister-in-law, Dena (Andrew VerSchuure) Van Mersbergen.

Of the Vander Wiel family, Catherine was preceded in death by Frank’s parents, Gerrit and Anna (Stam) Vander Wiel; his sister, Ruth Vander Wiel; his brothers: Gerald and Henry Vander Wiel; his brother-in-law, Rex Brush; and his sisters-in-law, Nellie (Gerald) Vander Wiel and Arlene Vander Wiel.   

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at the Covenant Reformed Church in Pella.  Van Dyk – Duven Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
