Wilma Vander Wilt, formerly of Ottumwa, passed away May 5, 2013 at the age of 96 in Zeeland, MI.
Wilma was born in Oskaloosa on June 8, 1916 to Neal and Bessie Van Klaveren Hulsbos. She was a graduate of Eddyville High School. She worked as a department manager in Kresge's in Oskaloosa before her marriage in 1940 to John Vander Wilt. They spent their married life in Ottumwa where they raised four children, Marilyn Rynbrandt, Carl, John and David. She suffered the death of her son, John, in 1963 and the death of her husband in 1983. She remained in her home of sixty years until the age of 91 when she moved to Zeeland MI to be near her daughter, Marilyn.
Wilma led a long and healthful life enjoying homemaking, gardening, sewing and traveling, both in the US and abroad. She was an excellent cook and was especially known for her delicious pies.
She was active in her church, The Reformed Church in America, in Eddyville, IA (now known as Faith Community Church) where she was a Sunday school teacher and was active in the women's programs. Her community involvement included being a Cub Scout Leader, PTO officer, Band and Orchestra Mother's Club and being a voting poll worker for twenty years.
Throughout her life Wilma loved to participate and be involved in whatever tasks needed to be done. But as her strength decreased in her last years, she was always grateful and appreciative of all the help and care she required.
She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn (Cal) Rynbrandt; sons, Carl (Carol) and David (Ellen); grandchildren, Sarah and Tim Elzinga, Martha and Kurt Boeve, Dirk and Emily Vander Wilt, Neal Vander Wilt, John and Ellen Vander Wilt and Matthew Vander Wilt. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren, Jane and Anne Elzinga, and Luke and Mark Boeve. In addition she also leaves her brother, Cornie Hulsbos of Albuquerque, NM; step-sister, Gertrude Van Zee of Pella, cousins Arlene Van Klaveren, Robert Van Klaveren, other cousins and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were May 11, 2013 at the Faith Community Church in Eddyville with Rev. Dr. Calvin Rynbrandt officiating. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the John Richard Vander Wilt Religion Award, Office of Advancement, Hope College, Holland, MI 49423.
