Alvin Goemaat

Pella — Alvin Jerry Goemaat was born on March 6, 1925, at Kirkville, Iowa, to Tunis and Alice Rouw Goemaat.  He passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Jefferson Place in Pella, Iowa, at the age of eighty-nine.

Alvin’s mother died when Alvin was nine years old.  His father later married Rachel Kolenbrander, who became an instant loving mother to the young family.  He received his early education at the Black Oak and Scott Center Country School and graduated from Pella High School with the class of 1942.  In 1944 he joined the U.S. Navy as a machinist and served his country until 1946.  He received a purple heart upon discharge.

On October 8, 1947, he was joined in marriage with Freda Newendorp at the home of her parents.  They were blessed with three children: Connie, Nancy, and Larry.

After their marriage, Alvin and Freda lived in Oskaloosa where Alvin worked as a mechanic.  They later moved to a farm west of Leighton, then to Leighton where Alvin owned the Leighton Garage for two years, and then became the Leighton Postmaster for thirty-one years, retiring in 1983.  They moved to Pella in 2005.

Alvin was baptized and made confession of faith at an early age at the Leighton Ebenezer Reformed Church, where he served as elder, deacon, Sunday School teacher, and sang in the choir.  He was also a member of the American Legion Post #89 and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).  He was a great pool player and enjoyed playing cards with his friends.  He and Freda enjoyed camping and spending winters in Texas.  Alvin also had a hobby of glass blowing, making many beautiful, delicate pieces for family and friends.

Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife of sixty-six years, Freda, of Pella; his three children: Connie Vander Waal of Manzanita, Oregon, Nancy and Ron Vos of Ireton, Iowa, and Larry and Rammie Goemaat of Runnells, Iowa; nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; his two sisters: Edna Van Ee and Donna De Jong; sister-in-law, Clara Newendorp; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Elva Roorda.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 17, 2014, at the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton, Iowa.  Burial took place at the Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Ebenezer Reformed Church Memorial Fund. The Garden Chapel Funeral Home was in charge
