Norma Houser

Pella —

Norma Jean Van Dyke was the oldest of two children that were born to William and Mrytle (Koopmans) Van Dyke. She was born on March 15, 1930, at Pella, Iowa.  Norma attended the Pella Community Schools and graduated from Pella Community High School. While in high school she played the saxophone in the band and later taught herself to play the organ. Norma met Bob Houser while he was working at the Rolscreen Company in Pella and on August 20, 1948, they were united in marriage at Waterloo, Iowa.  Norma was a devoted wife and mother to her three children: Denise, Dan and Duane.
Norma's first job was with Fowler Telephone Company in Pella.  She then worked as a regional sales manager for the Tupperware Company.  The remainder of her career was with Pella Rolscreen.
Norma and Bob shared nearly 62 years of marriage.  After Norma retired she and Bob enjoyed traveling together.  They spent many winters in Arizona, enjoyed Bluegrass festivals, camping, boating and motorcycling.  
Norma remained brave, determined and strong during her 40 year battle with cancer.  She spent many of those years supporting women faced with breast cancer as a witness for Reach to Recovery. 
On Friday evening, April 26, 2013, she succumbed to the illness at the age of 83 years while being cared for at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella. Those who will cherish her memory are her three children, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. They and their families are Denise and Jim Johnson of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Jami and Troy Matice of Johnston, Kayla, Lane, Celina and Brian Tooley of Pella, Austin, Cody, and Hunter, Dan Houser and his fiancé Karyn Rennells of Pella, Danielle and Kurt De Jong of Pella, Nickolas, Adalyn, Jeff Houser and Alissa Gotta of Tipton, Braelyn, Maddox, Duane and Barb Houser of Pella, Katie Houser of Pella, Lisa Houser of Pella.
Norma leaves her younger brother, Roy Van Dyke of Littleton, Colorado and a sister-in-law, Sandra (Houser) Allgood of Pella, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her parents, William and Mrytle Van Dyke; her sister-in-law, Barbara Van Dyke; and her parents-in-law, Cecil and Pauline (Renard) Houser.
Norma was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Pella; was a devoted wife and wonderful mother and grandmother; and a good friend to many.
 Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Pella.  Arrangements were handled by Van Dyk – Duven Funeral Home.
