Marion Roozeboom

Pella — Marion Roozeboom was born on July 27, 1919, at Tracy, Iowa. He was the third of six children that were born to John and Lavena (Fannie) Franje Roozeboom. Marion attended the Union Country Grade School at Tracy. As a young man, Marion and his younger brother, Peter, began farming with their father on their farm in Marion County near Bussey, Iowa. On February 16, 1944, he and Bertha Wilhelmina Schimmel were united in marriage and to this union two children were born: Kenneth John and Joleen Kay. Marion and Bertha continued farming his parents farm until they moved into Pella, Iowa in 1988. Although they moved from the farm, the farm never left Marion. He continued to visit the farm regularly while hauling livestock with his truck and worked at Frundt Seed Corn and for the Pella Nursery in Pella. Marion and Bertha spent many winters in their motor home traveling to Florida and in the last few years Marion enjoyed his coffee-times with friends. In May of 2007 they became residents at the Vriendschap Village in Pella and in June, 2013, Marion became a resident at the Griffin Nursing Center in Knoxville, Iowa. He passed away there on Friday evening, February 28, 2014, at the age of 94 years. Marion is survived by his wife, Bertha, who were privileged to have just observed their 70th wedding anniversary and their two children, 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. They and their families are:

Kenneth and Darlene (Boender) Roozeboom of Downers Grove, Illinois; Joleen (Ken) Iburg of Waukee, Iowa. Marion was the last surviving member of his original family and leaves only a sister-in-law, Freda (Peter) Roozeboom of Pella. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Ken Iburg on December 12, 2011 his parents, John and Fannie Roozeboom; his two brothers: Henry Roozeboom and his wife, Jennie, and Peter Roozeboom; his three sisters and their husbands: Jeannette and Pete Van Weelden, Evadena and Wilbur Roose, Margaret and Jacob De Ronde; and his parents-in-law, John and Gertie (Vande Weerd) Schimmel. For many years Marion and Bertha were members of the Tracy Christian Reformed Church in Tracy, Iowa where he had served as a Deacon and an Elder. They later transferred their membership to the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa where they remained faithful members. Marion loved to sing and will be remembered for his talents and self-taught ability to sing as a soloist and as a member of a quartet.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella.  Van Dyk – Duven Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
