Dorothy Gifford

Pella —

Dorothy Mary McMains was one of nine children that were born to Carl and Ethel Sarvis McMains.  She was born on November 17, 1928, at Lynnville, Iowa. Dorothy graduated from high school at Lynnville where she was a member of the basketball team. 
While growing up in Lynnville she met Claire Wesley Gifford and following his discharge from the United States Army they were united in marriage on August 21, 1947, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. 
In 1955 and 1961, they welcomed into their home their two daughters, Cynthia Sue and Mary Beth. Dorothy was a faithful wife to her husband, Claire, who devoted his life of service to the Pella Community and she as well was a very active volunteer. She volunteered at her church, the First Baptist Church, for the American Legion Auxiliary, the Pella Community Hospital Auxiliary, and for the Pella Historical Society with the information booth. 
Dorothy loved sports very much. She was an Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and enjoyed watching sporting events.  
In August, 2012, Dorothy became a resident in the Long Term Care Unit at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella and passed away on Thursday evening, October 17, 2013, at the age of 84 years. 
Dorothy leaves behind her two daughters and their husbands, Cindy and Willis Van Wyk of Pella, Mary Beth and Allen Ware of Ottumwa, Iowa; three granddaughters and a great-grandson: Amber Renee and Ryan Fick and their son, Brecken, of West Des Moines, Iowa, Jessica Marie Van Essen of  Milledgeville, Georgia and Rachael Ann Van Essen of  Normal, Illinois, along with her cat, Buttercup. Of her original family Dorothy leaves one brother, Warner McMains, and his wife, Mary of Pinole, California;  and three sisters-in-law: Lillian (Paul) McMains of Alden, Illinois, Berdena (Dale) McMains of New Hall, California and  Arlene (Keith) Wildman of Pamona, California; and a special nephew,  Jim (Jean)  DiAngelous.
