According to the latest statistics, roughly 16 percent of the population has a gym membership. On the flip side, almost 34 percent of the population is obese and over 60 percent is overweight. Here in Marion County, roughly 30 percent of the population is obese, ranking us one of the highest in the state.
Imagine if those numbers were reversed. Imagine where we would be if close to 60 percent of the population had a gym membership, 34 percent were overweight and only 16 percent were obese. Things would be totally different. Health care would look different. Corporate wellness would look different. We would look different!
One thing is for certain, at some point in our lives we will pay for our health. We can either pay now in the form of gym memberships, hiring personal trainers, buying home equipment or participating in fitness programs. Or we can pay later in the form of medication, medical bills, or doctor visits.
I commend Governor Brandstad for wanting to do something about the health of our state. Hopefully his Blue Zones initiative will help our state get in better shape. Unfortunately, most of the health initiatives we hear about are reactive strategies to our lack of physical fitness. I wish more of us would take a proactive approach to our health and fitness versus a reactive approach. Why does Iowa have to rank in the top 15 in the country in obesity before we do something about it? Why do we have to wait until we can't button our jeans before we do something about it? Why do we have to wait until the doctor tells us to lose weight before we do something about it?
Don't wait for that to happen. What's great about this life is we have the ability to choose. Today you can decide if you want to do something about your health and fitness or not. You can decide if you refuse to go up a jean size. You can decide if you're going to skip the buffet this Sunday. You can decide if it's time to begin an exercise program. Be proactive! So what do you choose? Are you going to wait until you HAVE to do something? Are you going to wait until the button won't button? It is your decision to make. Once you make the decision, everything changes. Any excuse you had before is now gone. Those excuses are merely standing in your way of achieving your goal.
I come across a lot of people who aren't ready to begin because they use their excuses as a scapegoat. "It won't work for me," they say. "I don't know what to do," they say. Once you make the decision, it will change your mind set. "It will work for me," you now say. "I still don't know what to do, but someone out there surely can help me," will be your new response. So now is the time to be proactive. Don't let excuses stand in your way. Change your mindset, and change your life! If you need to be reactive, I urge you to make a decision as well. There is no better time to start than right now!
