Update: Volunteers to work on playscape tomorrow

Lake Red Rock — As reported last night, 3M is donating $30,000 to the Red Rock Lake Association on Monday to aid in the development of a natural playscape at North Overlook at the lake. A volunteer service day has been confirmed for Saturday.

Instead of the usual, manufactured playground equipment, the natural playscape will have equipment made of natural materials. The playscape will include a water fountain, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math supplies, geocaching opportunities and prairie restoration. It will be located above the beach, on the back side of the adjoining campground. Plans include an outdoor amphitheater, where the US Army Corps of Engineers can present programs.

In honor of Vermeer's 65th anniversary, spokesperson Teri Vos said the employees wanted to do something to give back to the community. They selected this activity, which began in a junior seminar class for Central College seniors Ryan Dusil and Ryan McPheren.

"Vermeer is bringing the people-power to put it together," Vos said. She said the company is very excited to be a part of it.

Central College Professor Anya Butt said that approximately 60 volunteers are expected to begin registering on site Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. Most will work until 11:30, and after lunch, some may choose to return to keep working.

"Our goals for this volunteer day are to have the amphitheater installed, build the sandbox and wood balance course of the first pod, build an eagle's nest and construct a living willow tunnel as the entrance to the path to the remaining area," Butt said.

Butt added that Dusil and McPheren have remained involved with the Corps, in planning the project, as it has moved forward. In addition to funding from 3M, the Marion County Community Foundation also provided money for the project.
