Local Conservation Board to host Wildlife Management Seminars

Pella — The Mahaska County Conservation Board and Pheasants Forever are teaming up to bring a series of wildlife management presentations to the Russell Wildlife Area! Experts from across the state are going to be traveling to Mahaska County to talk to landowners and sportsmen about managing wildlife habitat.

Tyler Bass, Farm Bill Wildlife Biologist with Pheasants Forever, will be presenting on habitat management for trophy whitetails on March 24 at 6 p.m. Tyler lives in Madison County where he and his family manage their farms to produce huge whitetails, as well as pheasant and quail. He’ll talk about what they’ve had success with on their properties and how to achieve a healthy whitetail population.

Jeff Glaw, Wildlife Biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, will talk about early successional habitat management on March 31 at 6 p.m. This is a key habitat component for a variety of Iowa wildlife species including bobwhite quail, mourning doves, pheasant, and turkeys. Jeff manages the Sugema Wildlife Unit where they specialize in management for bobwhite quail using the techniques he’ll go over in his presentation.

Kevin Andersen, Private Lands Wildlife Biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, will be talking about maximizing the effectiveness of food plots to benefit wildlife populations on April 7 at 6 p.m. Kevin works with hundreds of landowners each year and helps manage food plots across the southeast quarter of the state.
