Standing by your man!

Pella — We saw last time that it's the responsibility of a wife to respect and honor her husband; and to do so whether or not on the basis of the "position" God has placed him in her life!  But what can you do if your husband is not leading, or is not leading in love?  What if your husband is not a Christian and wants nothing to do with God?  What then?   1 Peter chapter three gives us some practical advice on this matter. Let's read it together: " submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the Word , they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives...(and) the unfading beauty of a gentle spirit..."  What can you do?

First of all, a wife must MODEL A GODLY ATTITUDE! This will come from making a decision to see your husband as one God has placed in your life for your good. Instead of putting him down when he fails, encourage him in the little things he does well. If you have been the one running the home, you may need to humble yourself and lovingly place your husband in the position of leadership. Even if he doesn't want to lead, your attitude of encouragement will make a difference.   Second, the wife must MODEL A GODLY CHARACTER! Let your husband see your devotion to Christ and your commitment to God's Word in YOUR life.  Let him see God's place in your emotions as you trust Him with your life and marriage, in spite of the problems!  Let him see by your character that Jesus is the "glue" that holds you together.  This will require a step of faith, but God will meet you there!  Thirdly, a wife must MODEL A OUIET SPIRIT!  Your husband will more likely respond to your example than to your words!  Don't continually nag your husband to death about what HE should be doing differently.  Just quietly do what God's Word tells YOU to do.  Remember, God honors your obedience!  The Living Bible states verse four this way: ''your godly lives will speak to (your husbands) better than any words!

God's Word is saying this:  The changes you want to see your husband, model in your own life! It is not your responsibility to change or fix your husband.  That's God's job, in His time, and in His way!  However, it IS your responsibility to allow God to change Y0U!  What you must do is continue obeying God's Word by faith, and leave the results to God.  You can trust Him to be faithful.  So, if you're going through the small end of a funnel right now in your marriage, and divorce seems eminent, don't give up! God has another plan!  And part of that plan is to work in YOU!  Don't waste your sorrows;  let God use them to make a trophy of His grace out of your life and your marriage!  The encouragement here is to stand by your man and watch God work!

Let me remind each of us.  This weekend is Resurrection Sunday.   Friday was a dark day.  It seemed that everything the disciples believed was crashing down.  The Savior in whom they had put their trust was hanging on a cross, about to die.  How could this happen?  Maybe that's how you feel right now, that it's over.  If that's you, then remember this.  Sunday is coming!  When Jesus rose from the dead on that Sunday morning, everything became new!  We were dead in our sin, but Sunday came!  We had no hope in the world, but Sunday came!  If you have put your trust in the living Savior, Jesus Christ, then Sunday is a reality and everything is new;  new life in Christ, new hope for eternity, and new power to live each day.  It may feel like Friday right now, but look up because the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you and gives you everything you need to live this life by faith in the Son of God who loves you and gave Himself for you!  Believe that!  Trust in that!
