It’s that time of the year again, harvest time! The combines have been rolling through the fields and farmers have been bringing this year’s harvest to town. One of the best things about living in the mid-west is being able to watch the crops grow and mature over the summer, wondering what kind of crop it would turn out to be. All summer long there’s the anticipation of the right amount of rain and sunshine to produce a bountiful crop. And now, here we are at harvest time!
Each year a harvest is possible because God has set into motion a natural law of sowing and reaping. God‘s law of sowing and reaping is simply this: 1) You will reap WHAT you sow, 2) you will reap MORE than you sow, and 3) you will reap LATER than you sow! We know this as “the law of the harvest.”
Farmers understand this better than anyone. If you plant soybeans, you will harvest soybeans, because seeds can only reproduce what they are; you always reap what you sow! We know one seed will produce hundreds more seeds, so the more seeds you sow, the greater the harvest; you always reap more than you sow! We also know sowing and planting are done in the spring, taking several months for the plants to mature and produce grain, until finally in the fall it’s time for harvest. The reaping process takes time; you always reap later than you sow!
So, why all this farming talk? Because the basic principles of sowing and reaping are directly related to our personal lives. The law of the harvest affects YOU, and it affects me! Here’s what God’s Word says on this subject: “Don’t be misled. Remember that you can’t ignore God and get away with it; a man will always reap just the kind of crop he sows! If he sows to please his own wrong desires, he will be planting seeds of evil, and he will surely reap a harvest of spiritual decay and death. But if he plants the good things of the Spirit, he will reap the everlasting life which the Holy Spirit gives him (Galatians 6:7-8, TLB)!”
Verse 7 implies it is possible to be misled or deceived into thinking it doesn’t matter what we do, or how we spend our time. But at harvest time, it matters! It may not be seen today, but whatever we are sowing with our seeds of time, thoughts and actions, there will be a time to reap the fruit! Listen, there are consequences to everything we do. Everything we do has a “natural” result , or an expected harvest. The question of the week is this: “What seeds are you and I planting?” Are they good seeds? Are they seeds we want to be harvested in our lives, or in our children’s lives? After thinking about it, maybe we should be praying for a crop failure!
Let me ask you this: Are you experiencing good fruit in your life? If not, and life seems hard, perhaps you’ve been sowing some bad seed! If we want God’s best, we must sow seeds of obedience to His Word. We must sow the seed of doing what is right. Listen again to verse 9 from The Living Bible: “And let us not get tired of doing what is right; for after a while, we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t get discouraged and give up!”
Let’s take this law of the harvest to heart and begin sowing good seed. It’s never too late to start sowing good seed , and the harvest will be worth it!
