Pella Athletic Booster Club kicks off membership drive as new school year begins

Pella — Once again, it is that time of the year for the Pella Athletic Booster Club’s annual membership drive. The Pella Athletic Booster Club (PABC) is a non-profit organization formed to assist and support the athletic activities conducted by the Pella Community School District. “We, as an organization, believe that participation in the school’s athletic programs is a positive experience that allows students to develop leadership skills, strong values, character and teamwork,” says Mike Vander Wert, PABC Board President, “so to that end, the PABC provides monetary and volunteer support for interscholastic athletics at the Pella Middle School and Pella Community High School.”

Funds raised from the PABC membership drive, concessions sales, Spirit Wear, Annual Golf Tournament, the Annual Fall Booster Benefit Bash (coach recognition/silent auction/dance event) and other donations to the club are spent directly on athletic equipment and facility improvements for the student athletes such as weight room equipment, track hurdles, football blocking sled and dummies, softball and baseball pitching machines, tennis ball machines, automated track timing system, Cross Country tent, Volleyball nets/equipment, gymnasium scoreboard panels and scorer’s tables, senior awards, softball/ baseball batting cage netting, wrestling uniforms, football play clocks, and soccer equipment, just to name a few.

The PABC membership drive is a community-wide invitation to all Pella Community athletic supporters, whether they have students currently participating in a school sport or not, to join PABC and Families with Middle School

and High School students have been encouraged to go to the Pella Community Schools online web site, when Registering your student for school, to print out, complete and mail in a PABC membership form with your donation to Pella Athletic Booster club, P.O. Box 485, Pella, IA 50219. Past PABC members will also be receiving within the next month, a membership form in the mail to complete and mail in with your membership dues. Membership forms can also be picked up at any time from the new High School Athletic Office (across from the high school gym next to the indoor concession stand or call their direct line at 628-7305),the Middle School Athletic Director, Scott Tjeerdsma, the High School Athletic Director, Dale Otte or from any PABC Board Member: Mike and Charma Vander Wert, Ryan and Jill Davis, Sam Van Maanen, Karen Elliott, Julie Kingery, Lynne Henry, Steve and Cherie Schemm, Steve and Kris Scholten, Sam and Jill Vande Weerd, Vern and Carla Vander Molen and Chad Ver Steeg. A PABC membership list will be inserted in the Varsity Football Program the night of Homecoming, September 28, when the Little Dutch take on Chariton, so send in your membership form and dues as soon as possible.

The PABC operates the concession stands at all Middle School and High School home athletic events and calls upon parents of athletes and community members to volunteer to man the concessions at each event. “Nearly two hundred concession volunteers are needed just to man the concession stand for the 9th Grade/Varsity, JV and Middle School football games alone,” says Jill Vande Weerd and Julie Kingery, PABC Concessions Committee Chairs and Volunteer Schedulers, “and then with winter and spring, many more volunteers are needed for help with concessions during volleyball, basketball, wrestling, track and soccer seasons, as well.” Monies earned by concession volunteers is the highest source of funds for PABC followed by the funds brought in from this Annual Membership Drive. Businesses and organizations are also encouraged to rally their employees together to work as a group at one or more sporting events in the concession stand. Also, mark your calendars for the first, Annual PABC Booster Benefit Bash to be held on Saturday evening, November 3, 2012, at Central College’s Graham Hall to celebrate and recognize all of the Pella Community School’s Athletic Coaches. There will be appetizers, cash bar, a silent auction and a DJ with karaoke and dancing following the recognition portion of the evening. Tickets will go on sale soon for $40/person, with proceeds going to the PABC.
